Yep. Reputedly, it was the factory's 'cure' for vapour lock.
A small in-tank electric pump fed the block-mounted mechanical one.

As I understand it all the L-69 305 HO cars had them regardless of year. The LG-4 305 low output cars did not up until about 1986 when they got them, too.

Yes, that will work well. If it is a QJet set your pressure to about 6 psi and you are laughing

I wouldn't bother taking the tank down to put a pump in it- that's a tough job. I'd just get an inline pump and mount it somewhere near the tank. Regardless, you're going to need a bypass-style regulator to bring the pressure of the electric pump down to carb-friendly levels. Mallory makes such a regulator and it seems to be the one most people gravitate to in situations like this. I use it on my 92 RS that is converted over to carb and it works great.

FYI...

The pump in the tank for L69's was a service bulletin for the vapor lock problem. They were only installed if the customer (me) complained about the rough running engine.

They finally put out another kit that supposedly works. I think it modifies the fuel entry into the jets at higher location so the fuel is a little cooler and not percolating. I have yet to install it. Over the years, the stumbling has somewhat decreased where it doesn't bother me near as much as it did when it was new.

just pulled my tank today...No intank pump.
I've got an 86 Z28 Carbed 305. Block mounted Mechanical pump. I believe 87 is when the LG4 cars started with intank (or late 86 models)

So on these mechanical fuel pump cars, are the fuel lines run on the passenger side? Or are they still on the drivers side & then crossed over to the fuel pump? I'm not familiar with the earlier models & was just curious. Thanks

Yeah, the carb cars had both the feed and return lines run down the pass. side of the car. They pop out of the fram rail near the block mounted pump (down low). 3/8" feed, 5/16" return line.
