Q-Jet question for five7kid or any other Q-Jet guru
Can I use a q-jet on my 355 with little modifications other that metering rods while using a Comp 282S flat tappet cam? The specs at .050 are 236* and the lift is like .528 with the 1.6 to 1 rockers. I have read that the q-jets may not work properly without heavy modifications when using agressive cams. Would this be an issue with the Comp Cam I have?
I have vurtually no carb experience and I am once again dumping fuel into the crank case with my stupid Holley.
I am beginning to wonder if this car will ever run again.
I have an M4M non CC q-jet that I think I will have a friend rebuild, and then install on my 355, so that I can at least drive this car once before I die. But I want to make sure it will run with the cam I have.
I am so disgruntled about this whole car project at this time, that I am seriously thinking about selling it all and going to Africa on a mission trip!!

Tell that to the guy I saw at Ennis last night. He had a 73 Pontiac Firebird with a 400 that was complete down to a Dual Plane, Cast Manifolds, and A/C. He had a similar sized cam and ran a 11.3 @ 115 on a near stock pontiac Q-Jet.
I had a Comp Extreme 274 H in a 305 and ran a stock Q-jet on it.
The thing that you will need to do is drill the small holes in the throttle plates so you are not idling in the transition slots as well as replace the power piston spring with one meant for a 1973 Super Duty 455 pontiac. It comes in @ 3 in/hg. Stock Q-jets typically are all the way up in the rich position at 8 in/hg. You can see where an engine that might only make 5-7 in/hg would run rich all the time.
