dumb tranny question

Hi Guys,

I did a search but couldn't find an answer...

I had a company rebuild a 700r4 for me a few years back. Once I received it, the transmission sat on the garage floor for a few months.

When I was installing the transmission, I noticed the pump shaft seemed a bit off-center. However, I'm not a guru on these things so I foolishly assumed it was ok and continued with the install. However, now that the car is running, I have a leak from what appears to be the front pump seal area! Would the pump shaft being a little off-center cause this? Any other ideas? I hate the thought of pulling that transmission out again

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: dumb tranny question

Any misalignment of a shaft will cause it to eat seals like a fat kid eats Twinkies. If you're front seal is leaking only option is to remove the trans for further diagnosis.

Re: dumb tranny question

the input shaft really has no real support at the front until you put the torque converter on it, which itself pilots off the bushing in the pump.

how far off center was it?

I honestly don't remember how far off it was but it was enough that I noticed it

If I pull the tranny, is aligning it as simple as unbolting the pump (I think there were 2 bolts) and centering it with the seal?

No , there are 7 bolts holding the pump on , each bolt with an O ring under it's head . The pump is located very positively in one position in the transmission case and is not movable by even the slightest amount .

If you want a good view of all the parts , have a look at the top of the page at my "pictures of every component of a 700R4" thread ...

Re: dumb tranny question

Thanks for the reply OrangeBird!

If there are 7 bolts holding the pump on, I don't understand how it could be off-centered?

Any thoughts?

I guess I'd have to ask , which shaft is off center ?

When you look at it with the torque converter removed , you see the fatter outer shaft that is the biggest part that fits into the torque converter , and inside that you see a smaller shaft , which is actually the input shaft (the big outer one doesn't turn , only the inner one does) . If the outer one is crooked , either it's not mounted correctly to the pump (kinda unlikely) or the pump is not seated correctly into the transmission case (highly likely if the rebuilder was having a bad day) .

Either way , and I know just how bad it sucks , the transmission will of course have to come out to find out exactly whats up . When you do remove it , take a bunch of pictures so we can see what it looks like in there .

Re: dumb tranny question

It's been a while but I believe it was the larger, outer shaft that was off-centered.

I will pull the transmission, take some pics and go from there.

Thanks to everyone for the help!
