I recently bought a 1987 TA with a 305. It ran great for 25 miles and then began to have a starting problem. I added fuel into the carb and it fires right up and dies in a few seconds. Does this mean the fuel pump is bad? Or is there a sending unit or relay? Please help. I do not want to pull the tank inless absoultle necessary. Thanks, Russ Howe

 

Try changing the fuel filter.

 

While you have the fuel line off for the fuel filter check/replacement, check for flow when the ignition is first turned on. You should have an in-tank electric fuel pump, which should come on for a few seconds when the ignition is first turned on (requires oil pressure for the electric pump to continue operating). You could even do the fuel-in-the-carb thing while checking for fuel flow, but you need to keep safety first and make sure you are collecting all fuel that comes out of the line, and keep it away from ignition sources. Assistance for the procedure is a very good idea.
