I'm having trouble running a choke cable. what do you guys use? I have choke cable and it closes the choke, but when I push it in to open it the cable housing just flexes and nothing opens

I had the same prolem due to where I put the choke control (under the dash next to the diagnostic port). The trick I found is to "preload" the cable a little, so that fully open the control has 1/4" to 3/8" of rod stil extending. This allows you to give the cable the extra push it needs to open back up after start up. Another thing you might try is using a shorter cable and grasing the it by removing it from the housingand running it through a greaced rag.
