Tuning Help

any suggestions ?
history, 73 350 30 over, 193 smoggers, performer intake,600 performer carb, tru dual headers, new pertronics hei, holly mech fuel pump, mild cam, specs unknown.
ok here we go. i cant seem to get that annoying off the line bog to go away !
timing seems best at 14 advance, need timing tape to see if i have 36 total.
adjusted mixture screws to max vac 21".
carb is stock setup.
idle is about 800 rpm.
fule pressure is 6 psi constantly.
spark plugs have a little carbon soot on them (rich).

ive tweeked and adjusted carb and timing every whitch way and bog is alot less then when i started but its still there, also i dont have a choke but after car sits a while it takes alot of cranking to start, once its hot it seems to run and start alot better at 160 deg.
one last thing, it seems to me thet every time i start the car to work on it idles differently. not rpm wise but sound wise if you know what i mean ?

any one ?

The hard starting and soot on plugs is a sign of fuel leaking into the engine from the carb. With an Edelbrock AFB style carb it usually means the needle & seats aren't sealing or the float level is set too high. This would give you a lot of soot. If the soot is light then it may not be a problem.

The bog tells you the engine is moving a lot of air quickly which is a good thing. All you must do is increase the accelerator pump shot to match the extra air. For the most stroke on the pump-shot you move the accel-pump rod to the hole closest to the pump plunger or carb body. If that isn't enough, the next step is to swap to a larger accel-pump nozzle. Bigger nozzles are available from Edelbrock. It's a very simple swap.
There will be a check-valve right under the nozzle. Be careful not to lose this when you remove the nozzle, and make sure it goes back in correctly if it comes out.

Running slightly stiffer metering springs can sometimes help a little if the increased accel-pump doesn't fix the problem. A four-hole spacer under the carb can also sometimes help.
The main fix is working with the accel-pump.

What kind of distributor do you have? Perhaps your abvance rate is to slow. An aftermarket weight and spring kit might cure the problem. Lighter springs and weights with a faster advance curve might help. Mr. gasket makes kits for HEI and points distributors. 14 deg. is pretty high for initail timing. Like the post before this that mentioned the pump shot you should have 2 or 3 holes on your accel. pump arm that you can move the linkage to increase the speed of the pump that will match the speed of the throttle blades opening and keep it from a lean condition.

thanks, this past weekend i moved pump shot to max hole it seemed to help alittle. then i cleaned out carb it was full of that red mud from the gas. distributor is new with advance curve kit but i think i will put on 1 lighter spring. also will order larger pump shot dohickey from edelbrock. i have a 4 hole 1 inch spacer under carb allready. thanks again will let you know.
