choke circuit

The ALLDATA system shows that carbuerators were used up until 1986,I have a carb on my 86 T/A but the Haynes manual only shows wiring schematics for 1984 and earlier with carbs. I have the dash light with the choke plate symbol that won't kick off. The earlier versions show a relay in the harness but I was told by some that I could by-pass that and run a new wire w/o the relay. Seems to me that would burn up the choke coil because it would remain energized. For some reason I am getting 1-2 v at the wire that is supposed to feed the choke instead of the 12v I should get. Bad ground maybe?

Carburetors were available on F-Cars through the 1987 model year, perhaps even later for exports. You may have a choke heater problem, or an alternator problem, or a wiring problem:

The info you sent along with the diagram was too cool, thanks. I went and checked and I am getting 8.6 v at the lt. blue wire.I will try to figure out what they mean when the schematic says "convience center" because I can't find a reference to it anywhere. My Coolant fan wouldn't work before, because the wire going through the fire wall shorted out and kept blowing the fuse and I ran a new wire from the fuse box to the brn wire at the relay. Would that same relay go to the choke also? The overheating problem has stopped and all that stuff works now.

The "convenience center" is a swing-down panel under the dash. It is just left of the radio pedestal, and at the lower edge of the dash.
