New to Carbs and 350 and I really need help!

Hello fellow tgo members,
I have a 350 with an edelbrock manifold, bored 30 over with a mild cam and I assume the car is running VERY RICH because the plugs are FULL of carbon only on the drivers side? I smell gas in the exhaust and the car uses gas like it was $.99 a gallon. It has a holley double pumper and an accel electronic dizzy, can I do anything to tune the carb myself to make it run better, or do I have to rejet it? I live 7000 miles above sea level.

Hi Lawrence,

Are you partial to keeping that Holley? Holleys have a reputation for requiring lots of attention to keep in tune and for throwing economy to the wind. A properly built Quadrajet will get much better mileage and require very little attention. I swapped from a Holley to a Quadrajet years ago on my '69 GTO, and have never regretted it.

Take it easy, buddy

Hello Dave,
I am partial to saving gas and our environment. I purchased the car with the Holley Double Pumper and I am exhausted with the price of gas for my daily driver. I would really like a 305TPI but until I can find one I am stuck driving what I have. I love the sound and the performance but she is costly to drive on a daily basis. She is running very rich and because of the changes to the whole system I just need help tuning the carb unless I MUST re-jet her. Thanks for the help have a great weekend.

Re-jetting is tuning.

It should be assumed it needs to be done rather than try to avoid it.

The only things you can adjust from the outside are float level, idle mixture, and idle speed. Start the tuning process with float level, then ignition timing, then idle mixture, then idle speed (may have to play with idle speed to get the others right). Next get some cruise vacuum readings in order to get the power valve right.

Then jet it.
