O2 sensor

O2 sensor

I have an 87 firebird with a LG4 in it. I put some headders on it a little while ago and forgot to tuck away the wire going to the O2 sensor. Well the headders burnt right through the wire. I went to the junk yard and snipped a new wire to run but im not sure if it is as easy as it seems to replace. I was told the O2 sensor is measured in resistance. Is this true? Can i just measure the lenght i cut off the old wire and replace it with the same lenght of the new wire, or do I have to take into consideration the over lap where the two wires will be tied together? I'm just a little confused as to how I should go about doing it. Any help would be great. Thanks Jay

The sensor is not a resistance (such as a coolant temp sensor is).

It is a little voltage generator; almost like a solar cell, except that it generates in proportion to the oxygen content.

It is VERY high-impedance. Meaning, it produces whatever voltage, but at a VERY low current. Shorting the wire to ground will damage the sensor. So it's about 99% certain that your sensor is smoked.

Get somebody that knows electronics to solder and heat-shrink the wire for you; and replace the sensor.

And of course, do a good job of restraining the wire somehow, so it doesn't happen again.

You'll be fine. Very low current means very low voltage drop over the length of the wire. The junctions are your primary concern that's why you should have the wire soldered and shrink wrapped.

Im intrested to because my o2 sensor wire got fried on the exhaust manifold.Ever since my car doesnt run right.I guess my sensor is smoked.

About $20 at autozone or about double that for an AC Delco. You'll make it up in gas within a month or so.

You can test your O2 sensor with a voltmeter..but you'll miss out on that "new car part" feeling.

My g/f works at glendora chevrotlet

I called her at work and told her I need a o2 sensor.She came home with this.Came out pretty cheap with her discount

Good deal. Put it in and see if you notice a change. You should be getting better than 20 mpg.

Dont use Bosch single wire 02's.

they have a known internal ground issue that doesnt quite jive 100% with the actual GM part.

Get a delco sensor.

If u dont have a dealer hookup for them, check turbo buick vendors, its the same sensor and they buy them in bulk, so most of them have sales or sell the sensor for $20
