I can be proud since it's in my car, but it's going the second I finish school, or come across some money

That's kind of like having a limp from a self-inflicted wound and being proud of it. . .

Actually, since this is the "Carburetors" forum, I'll assume you mean "have an LG4 induction system" and are proud of it. If that's the case, you can count me in (although I don't have a Firebird). LG4's improve quickly with the standard smallblock Chevy bolt-ons like exhaust, cam, & air cleaner. LO3's, on the other hand, are severely limited by their heads.

If you really mean "have a stock LG4 and are proud of it", well, there are doctors for that sort of thing.

Yeah, I have an LG4 and it's not the fastest thing around, but every time I do a major mod it gets quicker. I don't understand why people rag on this engine like they do, because with just a few major parts it can go from a 16-second slouch to a 13-second cruiser. No chip tuning required, and no costly fabrication necessary. Just add a better exhaust, a hotter cam and some good heads and you're essentially there... the same things we have been to SBC to get more power for decades.

Besides, if you're concerned with $$-to-HP ratio of engines, go buy a Mustang. If you just want a fast car out of the box, buy a Vette. There's something to be said about the feeling of pride and accomplishment that you gets know that you put time, money and effort in your car to make it quick.

Here I would have thought that at a site called "thirdgen.org" one could be the proud owner of a 4 cylinder camaro or firebird.

It all depends upon what's behind it.

Besides, I have it on good authority that "pride comes before the fall."

A lot of people have good results with Comp's XE 256 grind. Plenty of torque down low for those stoplight-to-stoplight encounters and a lot more HP for upper end acceleration.

Comp's XE 262 is also a good grind, but I hear mixed results about using it on a 305. Some say it works like stock, some say it has the drivability of a drag car. I guess each person's definition of streetable is the real difference.
