Q-jet Vs. Street Avenger

With the sky rocket in gas prices, i was worried about my wallet and tight budget, and Holley, not being the best fuel economic carb company, i had doubts. i stuck the little fuel economic spring in my avenger, but that didn't make much a diff. Im considering putting a quadrajet on my 454, but from what i've heard they aren't the most reliable carburetor. Also, what would has the better performance? my street avenger is 770cfm. i'm new to carbs, so anything to point me in the right direction would help.

I have a Holly 670 double feed carb and I HATE IT, I would rather have a CC Q-jet and you can take that to the bank!

The spring of which you speak only affects secondary opening. So, if you are babying it enough to worry about fuel economy, you aren't going to touch the secondaries at all. If you like, you could even disconnect the secondary diaphragm rod to make sure they never open, but I doubt you'd notice any difference if, again, you are driving it with fuel economy in mind.

The q-jet is the fuel economy king of open-loop mechanical carbs. However, what's the break-even point after spending $500 for a carb? The reliability statement sounds like something from someone who is too stupid or too lazy to learn how a q-jet works.

Gm thought the Rochestor quadrajet was reliable enough to put them on about a bazillion vehicles, and warrantee them. They're good.

I wouldn't spend $500 on one though. If you can get one from the JY, and tune it up right, you might save some cash on fuel. Ok, you probably will, plus you could sell your avenger and get some more moola.
