Leaning a Q-Jet

Ok, been doing some searching around here and I"ve been trying to figure out how to resolve my rich running condition on my Quadrajet. It seems to do it half throttle or greater. Idle runs on the leaner side now that I've adjusted my float level slightly and I have my Idle mixture screws set at 2 1/4 turns out from seated. Seemed to take the bog away off idle and it idles smoothly around 800-900rpm in Neutral.

I have an 150,000+ mile L82 350, sporting SLP 1 3/8" headers, ZZ4 Intake manifold. and as far as I can tell, stock cam, springs, rockers, heads..etc. Its backed by A Non-WC T-5. I have a Jet Performance Stage 1 carb. Alegedly flows 750CFM. Fuel pump is a mechanical 80GPH Carter. I have my charcoal caniser hooked up, and as far as I can tell my EGR is functioning. Timing is set at 6 degrees mechanical, and 28 degrees advance.

Getting on it hard off idle and shifting hard through gears yield what I would say is an overly rich condtion. (guy following me said he saw a fair amount of "grey/blackish" smoke from about where my exhaust exits.

I only have part of my exhaust (3" header flanger to a flanged 2 1/2" dual pipe that only goes to about the tailshaft of the trans). Even free reving I can hear a lot of "popping" in the 3500-5000 rpm range coming off the throttle. I have a stock curve Cap-in-coil HEI, with Delco AR43's. would this be more an ignition problem? Or am I running indeed too rich.

The secondary hanger is marked R with FU rods..Thats what came on it when I bought it. I have a extra G hanger and DV rods. I'm not much of an expert for when I'll want my secondaries opening based on the tune and the flow rate of my engine. I'm uncertain of the hanger/rod relation for when the secondaries should be opening (I.E. lower letters opening sooner/ higher letters opening later). Can anyone clear this up for me?

Am I being paranoid about this? It doesn't float valves or anything drastic like that. Any help or insight is appreciated. Thanks.

No such thing as FU rods. A-E for the first letter is all they ever used. I checked for an EU rod but they don't exist either. Also, they're no correlation between the letters and how rich/lean they are. It's almost intentially random.

You can give the DVs a shot on the G hanger. But they're pretty lean- leaner even than a set of stock LG4 low output motor CH rods.
