car with issues

Ok as some of you probly have read I aquired an 87 camaro lt this past weekend, when it was dropped off the guy said it needed a carb and he gave me a nice clean holly to go on it as well as an old offenhauser intake that looks to be 1st gen and from what I can see it will not work with the second gen motor, anyway I took the cc carb off put the holly on no help there so I went and picked up a non cc dist turns out I grabbed the wrong one went back today to get another and couldnt find a non cc dist and i came across a descent looking cc q-jet so I figured what the hell and exchanged the dist that I couldnt use for the carb that I could, brought the carb home swapped everything back around and walla same **** different set-up, i re did the firing order twice to make sure I didnt screw it up and the car sounds like it wants to start and as long as I hang on the starter it sounds as if its going to start but as soon as I let off the starter it dies. Now I have no idea the history of the car so I have no idea what I have, I can tell you that when I have the cc carb on it the plug on the top left (forward looking aft) makes some sort of noise not sure if its normal but it makes a ticking noise and if I unplug that plug the noise goes away and it makes the noise no matter which carb is hooked up. I checked for spark and it is getting spark, it looks a little weak to me but it has spark, I looked over the ignition system and it has an accel coil, wires, and plugs on it cap and rotor look like everyday auto parts store brand not new but look to be functional carb is getting gas but im not convinced that the carb I got today is any better than the one I had.. well it is cause the choke is there but anyway I think im still going to try the holly carb with a non cc dist and coil, I am really starting to lean more towards a timing/dist issue and I am also starting to worry that maybe the timing chain is worn and it jumped a tooth if thats the case then out it comes for the re build and im sure my wife will never stop bitchin about that hehehe. anyway if any of you out there have any ideas let me know anything would be greatly appreciated at this point.

im also thinking about buying one of these on ebay and wondering if anyone on here has bought one seems really cheap for a complete dist and would love to get some feedback from anyone who may have used one or heard of someone using one.

Thanks for any help in advance sorry about the book but just trying to figure out what direction to go and this site seems to have a lot of knowledge floating around it.

I've been watching a similar one #270066667153.

The general concensus seems to be if they don't list a brand name, don't do it. I haven't seen people complain about HEI large-cap vacuum/mechanical distributors specifically, but I can recall at least one thread about small-cap ESC types from eBay that turned out to be rusted inside and with used parts. The particular one you linked looks like it has a coil cover that looks like an Accel Supercoil that's been painted red - weird, to say the least.

Check feedback. Looks like his guy has sold a lot of those distributors. Not 100% feedback, though. The non-positives have been over this item (customer service related - most people probably leave feedback before they install or at least have used the part very long).

I would definately check it over very carefully before installing, though, to make sure it has been put together properly.

no check eng light or at least not one that is working, of course you have to get the car running before the light will come on or go out if I recall correctly, five7 I was thinking the same thing about the coil looking like an accel but I am seriously thinking about giving it a go see what happens, its only 40 bucks and I will have to see what there return policy is if thewy seem to have a descent return policy then I may giveit a go hell its only 50 bucks I think its worth a try, if I do it I will let everyone know how things work out when I get it.

The best deal I saw anywhere was a BRAND NEW Accel distributor at Autozone for $125 - it's the brown cap (no one likes the brown cap) but it is brand new in the box, including different weights and springs for tuning later, and non-cc. It takes the coil in the cap, but coil not included. I've had no problems with mine after a year.
