hood/carb clearance issue
background.... 1992 RS, origionally 3.1 MFI with 700R4....years ago was removed for a V8 swap, they changed springs, mounts, and left it set for 7 years. i've put a carbed 350 with a T-5 into it. i have used stock Fbody mounts for the engine block, a aluminium edelbrock performer intake, and a 600CFM electric choke edelbrock carb. with a stock flat-hood i cannot get it to shut without putting pressure on the air breather, and i've tried a couple different low profile air breathers, and finally just cut the inside braces out of the hood around the air breather, i've now got a 92 Z28 hood under the understanding the Z28 hoods have a tad bit more clearance altho i dont see how. i've seen a 86 Z28 with same carb and intake on a 305 without this issue, will a Z28 hood help my problem, or is there another probable culprit i'm over-looking? i've just got the engine and engine bay put together after removing everything again for a colorchange and i'll soon be hanging hood and fenders back on it and its my next issue to tackle.

A 350/305 with a performer/RPM intake, and 1406 carb (600 CFM) with a 14x3" 1" dropwill clear a stock hood, but make sure your rear hood stops are adjusted properly. Behind the hinge, there is another rubber stop similar to the one at the front. This has to be set right depth to accomadate both the body lines and the carb. I have a zz4 with a 1406 carb and spacer under the stock hood and it clears, barely. Another note- due to the louvers on the IROK hoods, the clearance is slightly less than the stock hood with the heat sheilding removed. Hope this helps,

Mine all fit under stock hood on my 1992 with 350, Performance RPM intake (same height as Air Gap), and 1406 carb. Had to get a drop base air cleaner assy from Mr. Gasket (Pep Boys usually stocks), along with a 1/2 in riser (to get air cleaner housing to clear the electric choke), and use a 2 1/2 inch filter instead of 3 inch.

cool, thank all of you guys for the insight, it seems i need to find a smaller drop filter,(running a cheap junk triangular foam filter) i couldnt find one at the local part stores small enough to clear the HEI distributor but atleast now i know to look for a Mr. Gasket part, and i have seen the rubber bumpers in the hood hinges but never paid much attention to them, surely keep them in mind during re-assembly.
