Idle problems...help new to carbs!

I've got a 4bbl quadrajet and the throttle lever doesn't touch the plunger at all. It idles very high, but will come down to normal when I pull back on the lever until it touches the plunger and the idle screw, where it is supposed to be at. Is there any way I can adjust the throttle lever back or loosen it up?? Thanks.

The throttle shaft could be binding because of dirt or wear. Try cleaning it inside and out with a spray carb cleaner. If that doesn't improve things, a more through disassembly and cleaning might work, or it might need bushings and a replacement throttle shaft.

Could be stuck on the fast idle cam which is under the carb on the opposite side. You should have to blip the throttle up to pop it off this cam after it's warmed up and the choke is off. Make sure your choke blades are wide open at 90 degrees and check your fast idle linkage to make sure it's not gummed up or stuck.

The solenoid plunger in front of the throttle linkage is the idle load compensator. It will engage with the A/C or power steering low pressure switch to bump the idle up under loads. Idle speed will normally be set by the screw which the throttle should rest against when warm.

Yeah, the throttle does not touch or rest against the idle screw. I don't think its stuck on the fast idle cam. I already went through two cans of carb cleaner as well. I'll try to take the throttle shaft apart and clean it better. Do I have to take the whole carb off to do this? Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it.

You'll have to pull the carb to remove the shaft. May want to disconnect all the cables going to the carb first and check the action of the throttle to rule them out first. Is the throttle return spring in place? Is is a dual spring?

Yes, the spring is in place and attached, and it is only a single spring.
