Dodged a HUGE bullett... CAR FIRE!!!!!!!

Ok so check this, Friday the 13th of all damn days, i goto fire up my camaro b/c it had been shitty weather the last 2 weeks and ive been itchin to drive it. I put on a fresh Holley Carb, and I put a fresh Mr.Gasket Clear view Fuel filter on as well. Anyways, i goto start up the car. It starts! 5 seconds later, the whole engine bay goes up instantly in huge, very spread out flames. I pulled my fire extinguisher out of the back seat, and sprayed it down, but the fire kept going. So i desperately raced to remove my backup extinguisher mounted under the dash, and it didn't stop it either. I thought maybe it was electrical then, so i removed the battery. At that time, the whole garage was engulfed in smoke, so i had no choice but to put my car in neutral and roll her to the street. I raced for the hose and drenched the engine bay, but the fire had spread to the firewall and got through to the insulation. My car was smoking out of the dash like a mother ****er, but i couldn't stop it. I eventually just brought my hose and sprayed my interior down and stuck the hose in the top of the dash and flooded that bitch down. But the smoke kept going, and something was still burning very badly. My brother jumped in the other side and ripped out my cd player, indash ps2, and my 7" Alpine Monitor and my other friend started trying to rip out my autometer guages and everything valuable. I was spraying the hose full blast with no results. We called the fire Dept then, and the car burned for a full 10 mins. It sucked watching about 14 grand worth of car burn, but i did my damndess to make sure it wouldnt spread past the dash. The fumes became too much and i had to back off the, but i turned my hose to a wide mist and left it in my car and threw the t-tops off. The fire department finally got it out about 3 mins later. heres some pics. Ill post the cause of the fire below, and this is ****ed up.

Re: Dodged a HUGE bullett... CAR FIRE!!!!!!!

I posted a few more pics, an a pic of the problem. but obviously i didnt take any pics till after everything was taken care off. The problem was the new Fuel filter i put on, It had a defective screw cap on the end, and when the line got pressure with fuel, the filter's inside piece sorta unscrew'd itself from the end cap, Except, it didnt unscrew, it just slid across the threads, because the ****in end caps of the glass filter were machined to big on one side, causing a defect.....

Damn, I am really sorry to hear that. Is the car totally gone? Maybe you should look into sometime type of lawsuit to get compensated for your loss.

Hope everything works out for you,
Jay

Re: Dodged a HUGE bullett... CAR FIRE!!!!!!!

HERES WHERE I DODGED THE BULLETT! The car sat and burned for roughly 10 mins. I thought everything was toast under the dash. Well when i took the A/C out last year, i left all the ducting work in b/c i was to lazy to get under the dash to remove it. Well the fire started because that faulty fuel filter blew apart and sprayed fuel down headers and on my firewall and into a few pinholes that went through the firewall. However, the pinholes led straight into my a/c ducting, and the ducting acted as a metal box, and contained the flames and protected my inner dash. However, it worked against me too b/c the ducting also blocked the water being sprayed in there. after awhile, the fire made its way out of the ducting and started to burn up my dash. I had a metal plate i bolted to the outside of my a/c ducting under the dash that mounted up a power inverter. That thing fell off and happend to seal off the access point to the center of my dash and kept all my wiring from being burned up, at the cost of my power inveter, but i am happy with the trade. I went out later that night and bought 10 feet of 12 guage wire and some butt splices, and some new insulation pieces, and new fuel lines and new filter, and 4 fans to air out my water logged car. But i think shes gunna pull through with minor damage. I fried only my t.v electrical wiring, the ps2 audio/video cable, and 3 nitrous power/ground wires, a purge selinoid wire, and 2 of my MSD ignition wires. I cant wait for my car to stop smelling like BBQ so i can get my dash put back. I spend the rest of today rewiring it up, replacing the char'd wiring, all the ruined fuel lines, and soaking up all the water under the carpeting. Ill be up at 6am in the morning to replace insulation, and get the dash back together, and double check everything of course!! So i can cruise her to prom in the evening. Just figured id share my Fri the 13th with ya. Wish me luck....I got some work....

DAMN dude... you definitely got... well, you didnt get lucky. But at least it wasn't any worse than it was.

My car also went totally fubar tonight after working perfectly for a long time.

No idea what the deal is, it just makes this crazy whining noise constantly, I had to yank the battery cable to get it to stop.

So what brand regulator was it?

Re: Dodged a HUGE bullett... CAR FIRE!!!!!!!

Jageviley21 - Me and my brother were able to keep the interior wet enough that nothing spread past the dash, although we didnt know that at the time, until afterwards because of the thick smoke. The windshield may have suffered heat marks, so ill have to check that out. The interior is going to be good,(smells like BBQ tho lol) just as long as we can get all the water cleaned out before water damage occurs. I was debating on bringing the filter down to the place i bought it and ask them to "find the defect". If they notice the straight line grove going down the threads like i did, i will have them make note of it, and ask them if they have had anyone with problems like this. I dont know if i will pursue it legally at this point b/c of the time and money involved, and me going overseas in a little over a month. It just really upset me that i had spent a ton of money and wrench time over the cold months, only to have it go up in flames over something like this, after getting to driving it for only 3 weeks. Just curious, would you take some legal action after this?? As i see it, its just like You buying a new Oil filter, but it came with a crack in it, and your oil drained out on the highway and you ruined your motor. (yeah besides your guages telling you that your oil is low) but thats kinda how im looking at it.

InfernalVortex - Man ill straight say it. I did get lucky. Well at least getting the outcome i did, havin my car burn for 10 mins. I got an edelbrock fuel pump, The fuel regulator i have is a summit brand, but the actual fuel Filter that was defective was a Mr. Gasket Glass site one i picked up for 15 bux. Ive been using them for the last year and a half with no probs.. until now

Re: Dodged a HUGE bullett... CAR FIRE!!!!!!!

You got really lucky, glad no one got hurt. That's one reason I will never use one of those types of filters, cheaply made and there's a possibility of the glass breaking. Do yourself a favor and cover all the holes up on the firewall and/or move all the fuel line stuff off it. I'm guilty of having the regulators on the firewall too but I trimmed some sheetmetal to cover up all the holes. Mine will be changed around later this year for the new engine.

Re: Dodged a HUGE bullett... CAR FIRE!!!!!!!

Man your lucky that the inverter plate fell to block the fire. Your 13th might have sucked but mine rocked believe it or not. I finally got my title for my car after 2 months of waiting and ordering 2 titles. Went to the dmv and no joke went to the desk got my number about to sit down my number already got called, then went home got 'er ready and went for a ride. Later that night driving next to my friend in his GTA cop got right up my *** shined his spotlight and then drove past me. Scared the s*** outta me.

this isnt the first car that burned because of a mrgasket part, there was a yellow z28 and this board a few months back with a blower that burned to the ground because of a mrgasket FPR. i stay from anything with mrgasket on it.

Re: Dodged a HUGE bullett... CAR FIRE!!!!!!!

EvilCartman - Lol yeah i think i will get sheet metal an have them little holes welded up immediatly!!.

XxSgtReillyxX89 - Yeah idk what it is about Titles, but i havent had luck with them either. I bought my camaro last spring about 435 miles from where i live, and finally got around to titling and licensing it about 2 and half months later and the DMV pointed out that the guy hadn't signed with his full name. I.E. He wrote BOB SMITH, instead of BOB SMITH, JR. and they marked my title so i couldnt just go home and fill in "JR". I had to make and 870 mile round trip to have this guy take my old title to his DMV to get a new one made. Im glad you got yours taken care of and are out and driving it now.

//<86TA>\\ - Thats not cool to hear. Its one of the worst feelings to watch your baby burn and you cant do munch about it. I think i will do the same from now on and avoid anything Mr.Gasket.

I haven't used anything but a metal can filter for years. I used the plastic in-line in the past, but never those sight glass things. The main thing to me was always the ID flow area on the nipple, but this certainly puts new light on what to avoid.

Should be a reminder to everyone to always check every connection carefully for leaks whenever any work is done on the fuel system.

Re: Dodged a HUGE bullett... CAR FIRE!!!!!!!

Wow dude, you got luuuuuucky. It's a sick looking car too, I would have cried if that thing would have gotten roasted. Just look at it as much on the good side as you can. I know it's a bummer but man if you lost it all...I dont even know what I would do if that were me.

And if I were you, I would write an ANNNNNGRRYYY letter to Mr. Gasket Co, and tell them that you will personally see to it that you will dissuade anyone you know from buying their products. I myself have had personal beef with them for the past three years and this just makes me sick. All of their products are trash and I never had a good experience with them. Sure, an email wont do much, but at least you can let off some well deserved steam.

Heres a thread with my personal vendetta with them. Absolutely nothing compared to yours. Your problem just takes the cake man, but if you wanna take a gander:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/afte...ghlight=things

Honestly, I didnt expect to get that much of an agreeing response in that thread, but apparently, not many people have good stories about that company. All I know is that I am doing my best to keep my friends from buying anything with their name on the product. I suggest you, and all of us do the same.

Re: Dodged a HUGE bullett... CAR FIRE!!!!!!!

Man that really sucks, I know how you feel, a week ago when I was having my new exhaust welded up, when they were welding the hangers to the car it caught the carpet on fire, and I was standing there, and asked yelled, lower the car!!! theres smoke coming out of the windows, by the time they got it down and the fire it it totally destroyed my backseat and all of the carpet. But they were cool about it and paying for everything that was damaged. I hope you get your issues settled with mr gasket.

Re: Dodged a HUGE bullett... CAR FIRE!!!!!!!

So today i took that Mr.Gasket fuel filter down to the place i bought it, and they noticed the same defect in the threads as me. So theyre taking a claim up with Mr.Gasket for the damages. Idk how it will go yet, but the part is being sent to them for analysing to conform the problem. We'll see how it goes.

...As for prom, all that work from 6 am to 3pm was worth it!! I got the car looking like nothing had happend to it, I got the burnt smell out, and new insulation put in and all the pooled water out, Fiberglassed the chard up part of the under dash, replaced the wiring, and new fuel lines and of course, a solid metal 1 piece Fuel filter, and i even installed the cd payer, monitor and ps2, although only the Cd player works for now, because i dont have an power inverter at the moment, and the montior cables got burned. Everyone that seen the car said i could maybe roll it out the middle of this next week here. You shoulda seen peoples faces, exspecially the Cops, when they seen me rolling it to prom last night. I have a nitrous bottle mounted right behind my center console on the drivetrain hump, and i noticed that when the fire department and the police showed up on the 13th, probably 4 officers took note of bottles location. So i removed it. And good thing i did. Because sure enough, i got stopped for a check on it. The only thing i gotta fix now, is my turn signals arent working.

Re: Dodged a HUGE bullett... CAR FIRE!!!!!!!

Thats what I was afraid of happening when swapping my engine and putting all new fuel lines and an AFPR in. Easiest way to double check the fuel lines is to go to the fuel pump relay and jump it so you can put fuel in the lines by changing the realy switch source. I had a lot of fuel leaks, and eventually had to replace my AFPR. Always test the fuel lines without having the car running. Fire and explosions are bad times, especially when you don't know where the source is. Glad your car made it out alive.
