Re: 1985 Quadrajet help

Not to be an a$$ but this post is pretty hard to understand. There are lots of knowlegable folks here who like to help, but they have to be able to understand your question.

Your car runs poorly? Did it begin running poorly suddenly, or did it run poorly before you got it?

Are all the wires in the engine compartment attached to something?

Do you have any "check engine" codes? What are they?

The first things most here will tell you to do, especially if you just got the car is give it a full tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fluids, check timing, replace any rotten or missing vacuum hoses). Cover the basics, then begin troubleshooting. Don't assume the carburetor is the problem.

Re: 1985 Quadrajet help

I can't understand what you're asking, you didn't use any punctuation..?

The more (understandable) info you give, the more useful info you'll get back.
I'd love to help you out, and I know a thing or two about the Q-jet, but I can't make heads or tails out of what you said...?

Re: 1985 Quadrajet help

ummmmmmm.
ok ill have a go, Is youre choke opening at all?
The large plate over the front of the carbie, is it down flat or open so you can see inside the top of the 2 front holes?
If it is closed or almost closed it will be killing ALL performance and fuel econamy.

Re: 1985 Quadrajet help

The car runs fine to half pressed (half throttle?) but go any more and the RPM's drop and the car doesn't want to pick up speed like it should?

Throttle position sensor?

Problem on the secondary side?

Do you have both the correct computer controlled carb and distributor installed?

Is it still doing it after you completed the above?

Don't assume the carburetor is the problem until you've identified the carburetor as the problem. I read that somewhere.

Re: 1985 Quadrajet help

Some easy to check possibilities:

Clogged fuel filter-replace this
Choke stuck closed-make sure it's sitting straight up when the engine is warm
Choke pull off bad-remove vac hose, push it in, finger over hose nipple, stays in?
Secondary Air Valves stuck-tap with your fingers, it should move freely
Timing off/no advance-verify advance with a timing light

What carbie were you using before the Q-Jet?
What is youre timing set at?
Are all youre plug leads on the right plugs? (Not as hard as you think to mix up if you replaced all the leads at once).
Have you got an in-tank pump or block mounted pump?
Did the car have these problems when you got it?

Re: 1985 Quadrajet help

yea i got it off of a guy for like really cheap because the part of the frame behind the powering steering gear box was cracked .in about 4 cracks around witch will make the gear box flexed on the frame and u will have little to no steering. i work at a body shop so i just took it there and welded it . also redid a brake line that was leaking. an i have been driveing it fine. aww but the carb problim. it is worth fixing because the inside is meant and it is loaded ever thing power even cruise, ttops it is the berlinetta with the digital dash and the pods witch not many of those are left or where made.

Re: 1985 Quadrajet help

Don't count on a new carb fixing it. There could be several things external to the carb that could be causing your problem. Before spending ~$300 on another carb I'd recommend rebuilding the one you've got, adjusting everything properly and checking the operation of all of your sensors. Rebuild kits run ~$20. With some carb cleaner and a few tools you could get where a replacement carb would put you for under $50 (and maybe figure out the problem in the process). See a semi-recent thread started by Nate86 on rebuilding the q-jet.

Make sure the flat 4 wire plug at the distributor is disconnected when checking the timing also.
