Carb. Mass Appeal!!!

I havent been apart of this forum for all that long, or on the Chevy scene for that matter. But I was wondering what is everyones beef with Edelbrock Carbs. By far from what Ive read Holley Carbs are held with great regard while Edelbrock Carbs are a dirty word and I was just curious as to what were some of the legitimate reasons people dislike the Edelbrock Carbs so much? Im not talking about brand loyalty but real reason why everyone chooses Holley over Edelbrock in the Carb. Department. Thanx for your input. A noob will be educated by your responses.

Re: Carb. Mass Appeal!!!

I'll be honest, I can't find a real beef w/ the Edelbrock sitting on my 305 right now. The Holley double pumper is supposed to be the holy grail of throttle response and peak performance, but I have no beef w/ the 1406 vacuum secondary Edelborck I'm running. Cold starts well, fair idle, good transitions, WOT power is right on par with the cc-Qjet I pulled of the car, and the low end, tip in, and overall throttle response is definetly better than the Q-jet I removed. (As a disclaimer, the Q-jet was not communicating with the ECM very well, which may have inhibited some drivability functions.)

I guess I need to run a properly setup double pump to see if its worth the hype. Dyno and street are two very different things...

Re: Carb. Mass Appeal!!!

The Edelbrock Performer is a clone of the Carter AFB, which was first introduced in the mid 50s. It's an outdated design and the counterweighted secondary air valve doesn't lend itself to adjustment easily.

It's not that it's bad, it's just not especially good.

My biggest is when people pull off a perfectly operating q-jet, install a Performer (mostly because it's cheap), and expect a performance increase.

If you've got a q-jet, keep it.

If you don't have a carb and all you do is drive the car, go ahead and get a Performer.

If you want the most out of the engine (HP under the curve, bracket racing consistency, etc.), get a Holley DP.

Re: Carb. Mass Appeal!!!

Well right now I have a 350 Im building up and my whole top end is the Edelbrock Performer Package: Intake, Heads, Cam the whole lot... I just havent purchased a carb yet. I was just thinking of keeping it all Edelbrock but Ive just been hearing so much negativity about there carbs. So do you all think I should switch to the Holley or the Edelbrock? And what CFM would be best.

Are you interested in opinions of the Edelbrock cams, now that you've opened that can of worms?

Re: Carb. Mass Appeal!!!

my opinion....return the heads, and cam, and the performer intake....purchase vortec heads for bigger lift, XE274, and performer RPM air-gap intake, 750 dp holley and make more power for cheaper ANNDDDDDD have better drivability. Unless you wanted to create a 300hp performer edelbrock setup, then good luck. Their cams were outdated in the early 80s, their heads in the 90s and the only they've done alright in is the intake production.

Re: Carb. Mass Appeal!!!

The heads are ok for street use. They take a lot more lift out of the box than a vortec, and they don't need a weird intake.

Re: Carb. Mass Appeal!!!

Should I just say screw it and put that 350 in something else and go for the gusto and do a LS1 swap! My dad tried talking me into fuel injection before I started this project and the more I think about it the more hes seems to make sense. Better longevity, more tunable power, and far more civilized.

the performer heads don't flow more than 083 tpi heads really. The performer RPM heads are better, but those are for a stock grocery getter.

The E-Tec 170s flow better than Vortecs do, but have the same requirements of Vortec heads when it comes to intakes.
