Slow acceleration after overhaul of carb..
Need some help here again with my 87model E4ME qaudrajet carb...
I have just overhauled it 2 days ago and mounted it on the intake..Connected everything and started perfectly...Trying to give it some throttle in Park and engine runs ok...
But when I'm driving in D the car does not operate normal...
I was accelerating on a road from 10mph up to 50mph and that went very slow...Something is wrong but I don't know...When I slow down to 0 my engine dies but that could have something to do about the Idle RPM screw..
What could cause lack of power during acceleration??..Something about the Needle and seat that I've changed??..Or the Lean Micture screw that I've adjusted???....
I tried to do a "kick down" in 40mph and then the car runned great..Almost better than before the overhaul I thought...Accelerated very good but not from slow speeds and up....
Hope this thread was understandable...Need serious help..
Thanks

Re: Slow acceleration after overhaul of carb..
When you reassembled it did you reset the lean and rich stop to the original settings and verify 1/8" of travel for the mixture control solenoid? Reset idle air bleed to original number of turns out?

No the SES light is not coming on....I didn't do anything about any rich stop screw...The only screw I loosened was the lead mixture...And to adjust that one back to normal settings it stands in the carb overhaul manual that turn it to it is softly bottomed and then 3 and 1/2 turn back....

Re: Slow acceleration after overhaul of carb..
The screw that holds the mixture control solenoid to the carb base is called the lean stop screw because it is used to adjust the lower limit of travel for the plunger. When re-installed it should typically be set to the same number of turns out as it was originally. If this is the screw you re-adjusted to 3 1/2 turns out you should be fine.
You should follow up by verifying 1/8 inch of travel for the plunger by removing the idle air bleed screw, inserting a thin probe (I usually use a secondary rod) and measuring how far up and down the plunger moves, it's spring loaded so you'll feel it click down and up.
If this is good you may need to reset the dwell using the IAB screw with a dwell meter, if you haven't already?

Re: Slow acceleration after overhaul of carb..
Ok...I will try to measure the plunger today....I haven't reset the Idle air bleed screw either...Is this something you HAVE to do when I'm only overhauling carburettor with changing gaskets and primary stuff like needle, seat, float ++???....I havent adjusted anything so everything should be fabricated adjusted...The only screw i touched when I opened up the carb was this lean mixture screw..But now that one is in it's original place 3 1/2 turns out....
Have to buy a dwell meter then..lol...Don't have anyone in my garage...

Re: Slow acceleration after overhaul of carb..
I also found out today that there was a leak on my fuel inlet...Could this cause the problem???...Found it after driving for a while.....
Another thing that I was wondering is that the New seat that came with the kit looked a little bit different from the old one..The threads was the same and the size of it..But the new one has a hole drilled through it on the middle of the lenght of the seat...So the fuel will also come through here..Could this have some effect on acceleration??...

Re: Slow acceleration after overhaul of carb..
The leak and/or the seat should not cause your problems.
When you overhaul the carb you normally remove the lean stop, IAB and idle mixture screws (and maybe the rich stop in the air horn). Before removing them you can count number of turns to seat each then re-install them to the same turns out and be fine. Did you do this with each?
It's always a good idea to verify proper range of movement of the MC plunger after re-assembly like I outlined above. Sometimes putting it back together will get things hung up and interfere with operation of the plunger.
When these settings are off you will experience poor throttle transition and driveability issues at part and medium throttle. WOT operation is primarily the responsibility of the secondaries and is not affected (although transition to the secondaries may be).

Re: Slow acceleration after overhaul of carb..
Ok...then I have eliminated the cause of the Seat and needle.....When I took of the air horn of the carburettor I just loosened some torx screws and nothing else...after I took of the air horn I am down to the main part of the carburettor...I didn't do anything with the air horn so the IAB is like it was...You have to drill a hole and remove some rivets to adjust it if I'm not wrong...
But back to my history...After I took of the air horn, then i took of the solinoid plunger and loosened the lean mixture screw to get the float out..
changed those parts and mounted back the reverse of this...
Fixed my fuel inlet now...And also adjusted my Idle RPM on hot engine...engine runs about normal at 750RPM in Park but a little rough idling I think....And when I push throttle, engine uses a lot of time to get high RPM..The sound is also a little weard...Like he is getting to much fuel or something...
What will you suggest I check and do from now on???....
thanks for the help so far anyway..

Re: Slow acceleration after overhaul of carb..
Mayby I have solved the problem...when I am looking through the D shaped holes on the top next to the IAB adjusting screw....You should see the solenoid/plunger right???....Looking from the front of the engine I can see the primary metering rod on the right hole but not on the left hole..There I am just seeing bare metal...Could it be possible that the solenoid has twisted/turned when I've putted the Air horn back??...I didn't think this was possible when I put the solenoid in its position.....
I guess this could be the problem here...
I don't have a gaging tool to adjust the plunger...On the service manual it looks just like a axle of iron that has a spesific lenght..Am I right??...
On the paper sheet that came with the kit it stands that you can turn this lean mixture (solenoid adjuster) screw in to bottom and 3 and 1/2 turn out..And then you are in a OK position..is that enough or????

Re: Slow acceleration after overhaul of carb..
You should be fine with 3 1/2 turns out on the lean stop (mixture) screw.
Yes the solenoid can twist/turn and not line up correctly when re-assembling the carb. That's why I always check the action and length of travel after putting the air horn back on. You don't need a special tool, any thin rod about 3 inches long will do. You may need to remove the riveted cover over the IAB and remove the IAB screw to properly check it. If you pull out the IAB screw: first 'count the number of turns to lightly seat it then re-install at same number of turns out'.

Re: Slow acceleration after overhaul of carb..
Yeah but since i see the primary metering rod on the right hole and nothing on the left hole there is something wrong with the plunger...You should able to measure the plunger from both D shaped holes right???..And nothing is happening when I tried to measure it from the left hole..But the right hole I am only pushing the metering rod..I am almost sure that the solenoid has twisted/turned...I guess i have to unmount the carburettor again and recheck everything.....
I've seen how to adjust this lean stop on many manuals now and they are talking about a gaging tool and that you adjust it from there..But if it's enough with 3 and 1/2 turns out why don't they just write it like that??...

I've not tried to measure the plunger from the D shaped holes, maybe. Go ahead and pull your cover off and check everything...
3 1/2 turns out is likely going to be close enough in 99 out of 100 cases, who knows.

Re: Slow acceleration after overhaul of carb..
Just solved it..It was like I thought...The plunger has twisted/turned so one of the primaru rods was standing "free" with no push on it...I have just mounted my cover on again and am on my way out for a test drive...
The car started perfectly now and when I gave the engine throttle it was normal..Have to see how it is on the road now....
The only problem now is my choke..Have had that problem since I bought the car 1 year ago...Idling very roughly when engine is cold..But when warm it idles perfect....
Have tried to adjust a little bit on the fast idle and it helped a little bit but there are still some adjustments...
Any idea???

Good deal. That's why I always double check the action after reassembly.
There's a thread somewhere here on adjusting the choke. If I get a chance I'll hunt for it.
