help me pick a new cam.

guys help me pick out a new cam. i have an xe 268 cam in there now and i do like it but im going to put on some roller rockers and springs so i figure id throw in a new camshaft. i ran a 14.02 @ 101 with this cam and setup. i want to switch over to a single plane intake as well what would you guys reccoment for that. im going to be spraying a 100 shot into it. ive looked at the weiand stealth single plane which looks good to me.

heres a little info on the setup now. i will be reusing everything but i would like to get some new ideas on the cam and intake. im open to anything just looking for idea's on the intake i dont want a really tall intake because this all has to fit under the stock hood.

*comp xe 268 cam. flat tappet hydrolic
*64 cc heads 1.94/1.6 valves comp 981 springs and comp pro mag 1.52 roller rockers.
*holley street dominator dual plane
*holley 650 double pumper milled choke tower
*accell full billet hei deistributor.
*cast flat top pistons
*cloyees double roller timing chain
*edlebrock tes 1 5/8 shorty headers with 3" y-pipe cutout and 3" flowmaster catback
*t-5 with centerforce dual friction clutch. with this cam in fifth gear i can still speed up just fine without downshifting into fourth.
*edlebrock 1/2 plate with 100 horsepower wet shot with purge.

Have the guides been cut for more valve travel?

Single plane intake is probably contraindicated. Stick with the Street Dominator, or go with an RPM Air Gap. Any single plane that doesn't add height is going to diminish performance.

Something like a Comp XE282 would bring smiles.

Spraying with cast pistons is probably okay with the small shot, but go any bigger than that, you'd better go with forged.

The T5 isn't long for this world at increased power, either.

i want to keep the car somewhat streetable will the 282 be way big on the street? i could run a vaccum canister so my brakes wont be a problem but i dont want to have overheating issues or stalling issues. i will only spray up to a 100 shot and from what ive read the dual plane should be ok i would just like to find something shorter that will perform as well if not better than my street dominator single plane or dual.

Re: help me pick a new cam.

I find the XR282 to be fine on the street. There's enough vacuum for the brakes, about 10-12 or so inHg at idle. I've got a 383 though, but it should still be fine with a 350. Stick with a dual plane intake. The T5 is going to get shredded though.

Re: help me pick a new cam.

All of the Weiand Stealth intakes are dual planes. The single planes are the X-celerator and Team G intakes. The Team G intake line is their competitor to the Edelbrock Victor Jr. intakes and available in several carb pad heights.

Which Street Dominator intake are you running exactly (part number)? Some are very very mild intakes with small ports and limited RPM potential. But if it's the good 'ol 300-36 you already have a very capable intake manifold for sub-6500 RPM performance.

I wouldn't do a single plane for only a 100shot and that mild cam- not worth the expense for the performance increase, if there is any at all. With a bigger cam and a bigger shot a single plane starts to help more.

Re: help me pick a new cam.

981 springs
If you leave those there, you already have just about as much cam as you can put in there, without either doing a bunch of meticulous setup, or taking unnecessary risks. And even if you do either of those things, you can only go up about one step, to the XE274. The XR282 won't "fit" (although it's a good cam, I've run it too and liked it).

I would NOT put a single plane intake on it. Use a Performer RPM.

You just don't have the "infrastructure" for stepping up those things; cast pistons, small-tube headers, small carb, street valve springs.

I'd suggest working on other parts of the car to get it faster. Gears maybe; aluminum drive shaft; TRACTION; stuff like that. Remember, every .1 sec you can carve off of your 60' time, will give you between .15 and .2 at the other end of the track.

There's ALOT more to making a CAR fast, than dinking around with the motor.

Re: help me pick a new cam.

The xr 282 cam is great for me in a 350 vortec with ported 882 heads. It all depends on the money you want to put in. I would upgrade the tranny first then worry about the engine.... just my opinion.

350 vortec, ported 882 heads, xr 282 cam, performer rpm, 650 holley vac. sec., 436 horsepower
