Which HEI with a carb ?
Hi
First of all, I'd like to thanks all the members of the 3rd-gen org. who are helping me making modify my T/A with good advices, here in France. That had to be said !
I just recovered my 1983 T/A with a rebuilt engine. The factory lazy CFI has just been replaced by a Holley carb and a dual-plane intake.
That makes great changes from the CFI ! The engine is not a blast, but it is now meaner and more powerful.
Yet, I still have some troubles with it. At idle and just off-idle, the engine is VERY weak. Idle by itself is harsh, and when I releaf the throttle after a good acceleration, my 305 just barely doesn't stall. Even not talking starting : it never starts at the first time and, once fired, it stalls almost everytime.
I believe I got Ignition troubles. The factory HEI ignition is still here, altough the Cross-fire is gone.
The crook who prepared my engine replaced the CFI electronic computer by a 4.3 V6 unit. Not a solution for good
I've already given this guy too much money. Now I want to buy parts and fix my ignition troubles for good !!!
What parts/kit/manufaturer/everything could you advice me to buy to complete my nice 305 ? I'd love to have a rev limiter, so I figure I'll keep a HEI module. But which one ?
Thanks a lot !!!

Re: Which HEI with a carb ?
you can't run the factory distributor without a computer, as it's computer controlled. A good cheap distributor would be a summit brand HEI with vacuum advance, typically under $100. It won't have a rev limiter, and to get an ignition with a rev limiter would be several hundred dollars more, you would need to buy an MSD distributor with an ignition box like a 6AL, which IMO on a stockish 305 isn't warranted.

Now I have this distributor for sale in the parts for sale section which is of slightly better quality for $200, was $335 new, has 300 miles on it, but I'm switching to a different setup.

Put this module in the Summit HEI distributor.

With the Holley carburetor and that Summit HEI distributor, you don't need the computer any more.

Are you kidding ?
Is that as easy as Magic ? I just set-up this distributor and it will work ?
!*$¤@ The guy who built my engine asks me another 400 EUROS to modify the ignition !!! What an economy !!!

No magic, just that simple.
You will not need the connector that goes from the base of your computer distributor to the wiring harness on the firewall (4 wire flat plug). The wires you do need are the "Batt" power wire and "Tach" wire, and they will fit the same on the Summit HEI as they do on your computer distributor.
