help me build up my fuel system

i need more fuel in higher rpms. im running stock lines and a holley mechanical pump thats feeding a motor that make 576hp. i ran it at he track a couple of time before the end of the season, and when i pulled the plugs they are lean at WOT. so over the winter im going to intall an electric fuel pump, with bigger lines and a regulator with a return line. what do you guy reccommend for a fuel pump, and what size lines should i run (i was thinking -8an or -10an). also what are my options for getting the fuel from the tank, should i tap into the lines or get the tank sumped. also later on down the line i plan on running about a 150-175 shot of nitrous. please let me know what you think.

Re: help me build up my fuel system

8AN lines and a Mallory Comp 250 pump would do the trick... Cheapest/easiest way to do the plumbing would be to drop the tank, install a 1/2" pickup tube (drill new hole into sending unit, bend 1/2" tube in the same shape as the original pickup, JB weld tube to sending unit - works like a charm). Then you could either run some 1/2" tubing to the engine bay or buy some of that cheap (yet NHRA legal) 8AN blue hose.

For the nitrous I think you'd be alright using a fuel system like this but you might wanna look into a dedicated system. Maybe keep your factory fuel line and install a cheap electric pump just for the nitrous system. Another option would be a small fuel cell up front

Re: help me build up my fuel system

get the tank sumped run a BG280 or similar pump -10 up front to a nice regulator. You can go bigger on the pump than that also if you chose to run like a A1000 or something along those lines. For almost 600hp on motor then nitrous I wouldn't mess with 1/2" lines.

Re: help me build up my fuel system

As I recall the -8 is 3/8" and the -10 is a 1/2". I could be wrong on that(wouldnt be the first time)

Re: help me build up my fuel system

The number in the AN scale is what size it is in 16ths on an inch.

(ie. -8AN = 8/16" = 1/2"... -10AN = 10/16" = 5/8")

Re: help me build up my fuel system

thanks for the info on an sizes. i had heard that the return line should be bigger than the feed line. is that true. my plan as of right now is to have someone sump the factory fuel tank, run -10an lines to the filter and pump, then run -8an lines up to the regulator, and -8an lines to the carb. as for the return line i was going to go with -8an but if what i heard is correct then ill have to use -10an. hows that sound.

There is no need for the return line to be bigger than the feed line. Typically it's smaller.

on bigger fuel pumps the return line is typically the same size since while idling a LOT of fuel has to return to the sump. The aeromotive A1000 calls for -10 send and return lines for this reason alone.

Re: help me build up my fuel system

so if i were to run a -10an line and then switch it over to a aluminum or stainless steel line, i would have to use 5/8" stainless line. sorry for asking the same question over and over again. i just want to order the right stuff

Re: help me build up my fuel system

the steel line or aluminum line will vibrate like CRAZY....ask me how i know.

even with the rubber isolators, I'm not making that mistake this winter at all. All braided this time around for me.

Re: help me build up my fuel system

i heard that running all braided line will cause incosistant fuel pressure and creates more friction in the line causing higher temps. is this true

Re: help me build up my fuel system

friction? How? it's a hollow tube of rubber. There's not a flame under it to heat up the fuel. Where is this source of heat coming from?

Re: help me build up my fuel system

yeah i dont know how much truth was behind that statement. but the person that explained it to me was trying to say that, the rubber hose will create more resistant to flow, wear as the metal line will allow the fuel to move more freely. again i dont know how much truth there is behind that statement, but its food for thought. i quess when you are building an allout race car, that might be something to take into consideration. but for my application its not much of a problem.

The person who explained it to you is not telling the truth.
