Re: carb + HEI

if it has vacuum advance then there is no computer hookup for the distributor. Is it a computer controlled Q-jet or a non-cc one?

That is going to depend on the idle vacuum, camshaft, cannister type and
your intention for the timing curve.

Generally, on a stock engine, you can use the manifold port for the distributor
advance.

You must check your base timing, and full advance when doing this. Adjust
as needed.

Base timing w/ vacuum should be around 6-10 degrees
Base timing w/o vacuum might be about 15-25 degrees

Part throttle advance will sit around 45-55 degrees, and should roll off
as the throttle blades open. If you have an adjustable vacuum cannister, you can dial this in nicely.

Full advance for a stock motor will be best in the 36 degree range (+/- 2, usually 38 degrees)

The full advance is most important to check.

.
well i found what he used the manafold port for so i took it off and put it on the distributor, it made a lot of difference it smoothed out the idle and it feels like it has more power. i have not checked the timing yet (need to get a timing light). thanks for the help.
