mechanical fuel pump problem...
can a mechanical fuel pump break down via high temprature?last night my trans am died on the highway...after 10 minutes start again...after 1 mile the car stopped again...and wont start....i try to start up after 10 minutes and the car start normaly..but after 1 mile again the car stopped!can this caused by the fuel pump?my car is equiped with a mechanical fuel pump and a 4bbl holley carb.

Mechanical fuel pumps can fail, but they are usually a pretty robust unit. It is easy to see if the carb is getting fuel, take the air cleaner off and open the throttle. Watch to see if fuel comes out of the accelerator pump nozzles. If you determine that the carb has fuel, start looking at the ignition. A failed HEI module can behave like you've described.

the last time that the module was failing the car was backfiring.although the distributor is brand new...hei distirbutor with brand new module and brand new cables and sparkplugs!

Next it dies on the highway see if it's from fuel or spark then. Check to see if you have fuel coming out of the shooters. If not, replace the pump and go from there.
They are cheap over here, I imagine it'd cost you an arm and a leg, maybe even a kidney?

The pump doesn't fail with temperature, but you can have vapour lock.

ok guys!i just replace the fuel pump and everything seems to work properly!i just come back from a big ride!as for the price of the fuel pump..as i check usa prices are between 26 to 35 dollars...i pay for it 85euros!thats about 120 dollars!!an arm and a leg indeed!!!thanks for your heps guys!have a nice day!
