Re: Where and what to do about my ram air

It's not a motor, it is a solenoid. It is a coil with hundreds of turns and there is a plunger in the middle that gets pulled in when 12V is applied to it. If yours burned out, you can fix it by opening the end with the wires sticking out of it (you need to straighten the edges of the cylinder to let the end piece slide out. You need to buy "magnet wire" (enameled copper wire) of a similar gauge to the one in there and pull all the old wire off. You then wind the new wire back onto the cylinder the same number of turns as the original wire (or very close). When you put it back together, make sure you include the diode that is there across the two solenoid wires in the same direction as the original (look which side of the diode goes to which color wire). You can probably buy a replacement diode at Radio Shack. This provides an electrical path for the high voltage inductive voltage spike that occurs when the solenoid is de-energized. This prevents the voltage from going into your car's electrical system and damaging something.

Re: Where and what to do about my ram air

hey thanks alot for your reply nobody has had any information for me on this area, to be honest i never looked to much at it other than just looking at it. I just assumed since the hood scoop doesnt go against the wind it was a motor lol. Im curious how this 83 trans am ram air works it just opens up when you drive or how does that work?
Have some solenoids failed staying open filling the carb with water? or have rain water sucked in the fuel?
Also im thinking would sometype of small vacuum fit and work in there drawing more air for the carb?
or does the carb pull its own air good enough? Im not even sure my ram air solenoid is even broken i just assumed, What is the best way to test its function?
where do the wires run? and what part of the fuseblock if it goes there? Im going through with trying to keep my ram air, its 200$ btw to chrome your air cleaner housing top and bottom. Now if anyone can answer even one of those sentences with a ?mark, that would be great
