87 t/a wont start
87 t/a wont start
i have an 87 trans am with auto trans, its got the 305 4bbl in it. stock carb (i had to take a holley off that wasnt working right) i got it to start when i first got it, but it wouldnt run longer than 3minutes. then no more start after gettin it to start like 5 times with the holley on it. no more start so i changed the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and the carb(the holley was missing parts) so now i attempt to start it, it kinda wants to start, then a fireball or just a high flame will shoot out of the carb and it will stay burning until i put it out. any ideas as to what the hell is going on with my car? i will say that i dont have any thing hooked up to vac but i dont really think that is my problem at all. i got this car as somebody elses problem who thought it needed a starter but wholetime the battery cable was melted to the headman long tubes.
Re: 87 t/a wont start
so people are reading and not responding, maybe more information is needed. i also have a blue label holley electric pump with the adjustable regulator that was supplied with it( i didnt add any of this) my wire harness is hacked all up and im trynna work through that and patch together what i can. i bothered the fuel pressure and it hasnt caught fire since. i guess my next move is to try to ignition controll module. however i really need a engine wire harness diagram so that i can know what wire goes to the choke and which one goes to that other part that calls for a single wire.

87's had an electric in-tank fuel pump. If it isn't operating, most any mechanical or in-line electric pump will have difficulty pulling through the in-tank.
Re: 87 t/a wont start
i came to the discovery that i have NO spark at all. so i guess ill be changing the ignition controll unit thats under ther cap, and changing the coil and see if that helps. i wasnt aware of the intank pump since i have a carbed car i thought it was a engine mounted pump and the guy just blocked it off to install this holley inline pump. so what fuel pressure should i be lookin for?
