It's one of the wires going to the coil. White with a stripe, if I remember correctly what I've heard ('86 is the latest I've dealt with personally).
If you got a small cap, separate coil vacuum/mechanical advance distributor, you could re-use your stock coil.

I know. That's the year they went to the small cap distributor with separate coil. I haven't personally worked on '87-up 3rd gens. Therefore, I can't go out to the car and look at the wire for you.
I know this has been discussed on the Board before. Otherwise, I couldn't even offer what I have to this point.
Have you tried searching for "tach wire"?

Re: tach wire
alldata wont give me an exact location of where it plugs in at but the electrical diagram is stating its an all white wire specifically it states .35 WHT one one side of the wire and 121 on the other side of the wire shows it plugs into the 32 pin c-d connector at d4 (staring at clip not ecm with the lock clip on left side it would be 4th down on the right side) on the ecm also states pure white wire

Re: tach wire
large cap HEI distributors should have a white and red wire connected into the cap, the white wire is your tach lead, red is power. the other 5 wires that come from the base of the dizzy are for your timing advance and ICM, which is not needed for carb.
