Setting up my rochester Q-jet - Help please

Hi. I just bought an 84 Z28. The previous owner had thrown a 350 in it with a Turbo 700 tranny (so I was told) both with only 30k miles (car has 60k).

I havnt tried to identify the engine or tranny yet (tranny is missing bellhousing..great..)

The engine supposedly has a bigger cam in it. It also has an aluminum intake manifold, don't know what kind yet. The whole car kinda feels lumpy when I have it in drive with the foot on the brake, but i dont knwo if thats the cam or the engine just not running well.

when i let it just idle in Drive..it doesnt smoothly rool forward, sort of lurches to the lumpy rythm of the engine.

I just wanted to know if someone could help me to know what a good rod and jet combination would be for this.

Rochester Carb # 17086046

Tranny doesn't downshift when I'm on the freeway and nail the gas...but that'll be a whole different thread.

So if anyone could help me with what they think a good setup would be that would be awesome. I will probably rebuild the whole thing once i find out the jet and rod sizes or w/e. It is runing lean also at the moment i believe.

Thank you all for your time,
Oliver

Ok if the car is running and driving then its not missing the bellhousing.

Other than that sounds like your having transmission problems, I would get that checked out before you starting jetting the carb. The transmission could be all of your problems.

As for the carb jetting, every motor is diffrent start with what you have and adjust slowly from there till it is running perfect.

Yea, my mistake. Must have a 2 piece bellhousing or just an enormous cover since I can see the flexplate and torque converter just chillin there.

I'll look into the tranny.

When I have the motor just running in park and i rev it up at the carb it seems smooth, but when its under load, i.e. in Drive with my foot on the floor it seems hesitant and jerky. it jerkys like crazy when idling in drive too. i thought this was the motor suffering under load but also thought the rear end could be loose as hell.

I've been indenial that it could be the tranny but i guess ill have to take that into consideration.

Is the SES light coming on?

Sound more like ignition to me. The transmission TV cable may not be adjusted correctly as well.

There is a plastic cover that goes over the flexplate/torque converter. Sounds like that's missing.

Shouldn't be hard to find or expensive.

Junk yard piece for sure. Mine's steel. I haven't seen a plastic one.
