84 T/A carb questions

ok I have an 84 T/A has a 5 speed, 305 non HO model, it seems it has the lower geared 5 speed, cause in fifth it still pulls rather well and is tached at about 2500, but once my car get warmed up it has a tendency to diesel real bad, then after it is done it will give a single backfire seconds later, it will still backfire even if it does not diesel but it has to be warmed up, also another thing I have noticed is when you crank it to warm it up it will only rev to 3k rpm, if you kill it and crank it again it will rev like nobodies business, but any way to my questions.

I want to do away with my computer controlled stuff when i crank the car or kill the car you can smell gas really bad, , also i cannot find where to plug my 02 sensor in at lol, the car already has a performer intake on it and i was thinkin about doing some moderate upgrades as in a 500 or 600 edelbrock carb not sure which one to go for and manual choke of course since the electronics will be gone, what size would do the best for performance and economy, no to stir up quadrajet guy but ive never had any luck with them and not many like to rebuild them around here

msd streetfire distributor to replace the cc one, anyone used these before? also a wire and plug upgrade

and a set of headers for a daily driver what is best to go for shorties or long tubes? i figure shorties since longtubes may hang a bit low and didnt know if my clutch linkage may be an issue

also lookin at a flowmaster muffler and gettin the t5 rebuilt since it seems my synchros are nearly gone, i have to float them to downshift

well anyhelp with this will do me great guys and I appreciate it

An Edelbrock carb would be a downgrade. Makes more sense to find the O2 sensor plug and plug it in.

You can't expect a computer system to operate properly when it doesn't have the proper information. Give it what it needs (which isn't much and is easy to do), and you can expect it to operate great.

If you absolutely insist on removing the q-jet, get a Holley double pumper. A 550 CFM would be big enough, but a 650 wouldn't hurt you (wouldn't help, either, but if you do other upgrades some day, it will support them).

Plenty of people have used that distributor.

Shorties will be the only header choice that will give you decent ground clearance. For a 305 daily driver, they'll be more than enough. Hooker 2055HKR are a good choice. The $150 ones will cost you more by the time you get them hooked up to the rest of the system in a fashion that is actually an upgrade.
