Car runs for 5 seconds and dies...

Just putting my car together.. it was a TPI car and now i've converted to carb

I'm using an airtex carb fuel pump, 5-9psi output, holley regulator - 5 1/2 psi - and edelbrock 750cfm carb

The car will run for 5 or 10 seconds and die right away. If i try to coax it to keep running, it shoots gas out the carb and sometimes a fireball

How do I get this thing to run somewhat decent? I'm a complete newbie to carbs!

When first started, a timed relay powers the fuel pump. After that, the ECM tells the pump to run.

Sounds like you disabled the ECM's ability to tell the pump to run. You need to rewire power to the pump.

when i did my tbi to carb setup i looked up an easy way to get the FP to run, i found that two wires or pins on the aldl if connected will turn the FP on. So i simply spliced the two wires together and criped them.

Good Lord, sounds like my issue in a nut shell.

I just picked up an 89 Formula with a CARBED (after market) 305. The fuel will SPIT when started and then die out. I was wondering about replacing the module OR jumping the wires.

Considering I have nothing in the car (Scrap Weight plus a RABBIT was living under the hood for 5 years), I am up for some experiments.

SUCCESS!!

Thank you Johnknight1981 for the idea!! Clipped wires, fed them through firewall and set a toggle switch on them! PURRING like a kitten!! Also acts like an extra anti-theft device.

I have now deleted almost every aspect of the "Brain Box" and the car runs like it was made to get tickets. *EVIL GRIN*. I just wish I could convert the fail filled Anti-Theft key system. Any ideas?

As for the rabbit, he has fled in terror. *GRIN*
