Hey all,

Been a while since my last post, but over the summer I've wanted to plug away at the Camaro again. Since very few of you will remember my car, it's an 82 Berlinetta that I put an Edelbrock carb on. I started to hack up the wiring harness (didn't want ECM) but I think I've gone too far and removed too much. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for an 82? I want to get my basic sensors and gauges working so I know my readings are correct. I'd then like to hard wire a cluster in and then get a harness from a junk yard and do it all properly. I want to keep it as simple as possible under the hood and clean it all up.

Additionally, if anyone knows which wires can be eliminated from the engine bay since I dont have an electronically controlled carb, that'd be much appreciated.

No offense intended, but threads like this really make me shake my head.

You don't need to cut anything to remove unneeded wires when taking the computer system out. It all goes to a single harness to the passenger fenderwell, and can be removed just by unclipping and unbolting. I know this for a fact since I did a V6 to cc carb V8 conversion on Berlinetta #1, and pulled the whole system out in one piece from Berlinetta #2 in prep for the LS1/T56 swap.

If you have an automatic transmission, the torque converter lock-up wires are part of the ECM harness. If you remove the ECM system, you will need to do something else to restore the lock-up function.

Everything else you need comes through the firewall somewhere else. The engine controls and gauges come through bulkhead connectors on the driver side. The heater controls come through a grommet toward the right-center.

The Camaro Haynes manual has a decent wiring diagram in the back of it.

 

Yeah, I screwed up. Do you have the diagram or not? I don't have the means to get it (local shops don't carry and don't order) and I could care less to wait the 2 weeks to get it in. If it's a simple as you say, do you have a how-to that I might be able to follow?

I'm sorry for having disobeyed one of the third gen commandments, but fact of the matter is I didn't know the computer had its own cluster of wires. Since it does, do I just remove the computer from the passenger side and then remove all of the wires with it? The cars previous owner messed around in there as well, removing cruise control and other such things. It went from hacked up to more hacked up, so really I don't know what I'm starting with. Just want to know the easiest way to get as much out of the bay as possible to make my life a little easier.

It's specifically for the '85 year model, but should at least get you on the right track for your '82.

EDIT: So about the TCC. How do I know if it's not engaging? I've read that it only engages when I'm cruising. Should I notice anything when I idle?

 

It only engages under cruise conditions. It is operated hydraulically with an electric solenoid commanded by the computer.

If your computer isn't fully functioning, it isn't locking up the torque converter clutch. You need to provide that function independent of the computer now. Do you have the stock TH200C 3-speed automatic transmission?

 

I have no reason to believe that I don't. It's in pretty bad condition (leaking tranny oil from where the transmission meets the drive shaft) but let's assume I do. What would the rigging be?

 

so, on my 83 the guages are not controlled at all by the ecm?...

 

No, this all runs through the bulkhead. I've since removed the ECM and am tracing the wiring around, and it appears as though none of the sensors hooked up to the ECM produce any gauge readings (sensors for the ECM include oxygen sensor, coolant sensor, vehicle speed sensors, etc) so you wouldn't be reading these on your dash anyway. The only thing I'm worried about is the engine fan relay and somehow finding a solution to the torque converter lockup.

 

mine is also a 82 Berlinetta, I removed all the ECM and wires removed the V6 and installed a 383 stroker with a th350 behind it so the only wires are the ones that come through on the driver side and they control dash gauges, ignition, lights, wipers ect.

 

dang, thats pretty clean.......is it gonna hurt anything not having the TC locking up? i dont figure it has been anyway since all the tps and stuff is inhooked

 

It isn't as critical on a TH200C as it is on a TH700R4.

You can get a kit from Summit/Jegs/TCI/B&M that locks up the torque converter without the computer. It'll save some gas, and reduce transmission fluid temperature.

Ignoring the fact this is a thread hijack:

How long have you been driving it this way? If more than a few days, you've probably already damaged your 3-4 clutch pack.

You may have lucked out. Get the lockup working as soon as possible.

 

it wont ever work prooperly with all the sensors for the original carb unhooked will it?
