thinking of swapping

Hey everyone I have a stock 87 iroc L98 (headers/exhaust) and due to some recent events I have to take the top of the engine apart. Now I was thinking of swapping the heads at this point to make some more HP and raise the power band. In addition, I want to do a TPI to carb swap. My question is would a completely stock L98 with headers/exhaust and higher flowing heads WITH a carb swap make decent power over the L98's 5000k rev restriction? Or is there more work to do to get rid of the engine restrictions?

Thanks alot!

Re: thinking of swapping

cam size, exhaust are also a factor.....you might gain more top end power with a carb over a TPI but you will lose the torque that the tpi puts out.....I would opt for some bigger runners, intake and throttle body instead of carb swapping.....you choice of course, but just putting on a carb and heads are not going to do a whole lot. example.....the stock system is like a straw....aftermarket heads like a water hose...so your going from a straw to a water hose back to a straw...not really going to do a ton....maybe a little, but it's a start. Personally do a cam while heads are off...and I would stick with an upgraded TPI,
I've got a HSR and it will keep pulling hard up and past 6500rpm...(that's where my rev limit comes in)

Thanks for that post...well put! Say I were to stick with TPI I would only be able to only do either the heads, or cam for the time being. Eventually I want both upgraded, along with other items. But for the rest of this year and begining of next it can only be one. Which would gain more performance?

Re: thinking of swapping

That's hard to say....they are both just stock items....are you looking for just some more speed? maybe something different would help like a gear swap...but If I had to choose between heads and cams, I would personally choose heads....because you are limited to the cams you can choose because of the stock heads (some like comp xtreme fuel need a rocker change which you'll need screw in studs, not to mention lift limitations on stock heads)....it will cost you more money in the long run to do both serperatly. sEriously mod something else, or save you money until you can get BOTH. Or even get a new intake system, that would need replaced eventually anyway. How much are you able to spend??

Re: thinking of swapping

Yeah that was also a factor. I think your right about doing them together...sometime next year it will happen then! I have around 700-900 to spend on the engine IF the car doesn't need drastic work to certify (which it really shouldn't).
