need help on tank removal 87 firebird

read many discussions on this have electric pump in tank on 87 305 carbed engine want advise. if pump is not working will it starve engine on flow? i understand its helper pump only for vapor lock comes on momentarly on start up , if inoperitive will it reduce volume to mechanical pump? is it possible to remove tank without removing rearend on 87 firebird? if i do can i take electric pump out of system[ will ecm prevent starting with out complete circuit] and use only mechanical pump as older pontiacs were? is oil pressure switch a issue as far as inoperitive electric pump i keep getting air in acelerator shot bowl does not drain down do to well plugs seems like problem in tank pickup stainer or pump restriction ? just reading many threads that replacing pump was not the issue????tested fuel larger suction line at mechanical pump zero flow when keys on , removed small return line from mechanical pump pressurized volume coming from tank fill pump and carb up !confused???? any help would b greatly appreceated thanx!

I haven't tried it, but I understand you can drop the tank without completely removing the rear end.

Personally, I'd put a good replacement pump in while I was at it. But, removing it won't cause any direct problems. It will be more prone to vapor lock, but less prone than it would be with a non-operating electric still in there.
