Trying to figure out TPI to carb
Ok, I'm not trying to ask the same question that has been asked numerous times. I used the search and read that I can take out the whole passenger side harness and everything i need will still work off the drivers side harness. I was just curious on how power still gets to the fusebox to power everything. I'm guessing that i just haven't dug into it enough to see. I'm sure once i start seperating wires I'll figure it out, but it's cold and I'm waiting on parts anyway, and I suck at reading schematics. Just curious on something that will have an easy answer.

Re: Trying to figure out TPI to carb
I'm assuming this is the 91z in your sig? A while back I converted my 86 carb to 91 tpi, and am going to convert back to carb in the next couple weeks. I used the factory 91 harness when I did it. If I recall correctly on the speed density cars, the computer harness and the harness for the fuse box is one piece. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. The fuse box power wires connect to the starter. You would have to take the harness apart and separate fuel injection and power wires. When I do mine I will use the old 86 carb harness which thankfully I saved. If you get factory wiring diagrams it should be pretty simple to figure out which wires you need. I should still have the diagrams that I copied from a factory service manual when I did my swap. Let me know if you can use them. Hope that helped.

I see. That would be why i occasionally see other posts saying don't hack up the 90-92 harness. Guess I will have to go see if i can find the harness from an older model this weekend. Thanks for the info. I'm sure i'll end up with more questions before this thing is running. It's been sitting apart longer than i planned.

Re: Trying to figure out TPI to carb
Mine was a 92 V6 but the harnesses should be similiar enough.
The driver's side harness contains all the wiring for the front end lighting, airbag, wipers, horns, and power wiring for the fusebox. There is also the VSS and tach feeds as well as fuel pump control and TCC if its an auto.
On mine, I removed the airbag wiring and one pink "emissions control" wire from the driver's side harness.
On the passenger's side I removed the vast majority of the wires there. I think all I kept were the power to the coil and the wiring for the OPS, blower motor, and coolant temp for the fan control(which didn't work anyhow).

Yeah, i'll have to hit up the yards around here and see what type of third gen stuff they have. I seen many posts on here saying to take the TPI harness out as a whole piece. If i can make a few bucks off it, i will definitely save what i can. I just got confused with the posts saying to take out the whole passenger side when my coill and starter wires are tied in. Didn't know if people just ran wire from somewhere else.

Re: Trying to figure out TPI to carb
The coil just needs power when the key is in run and start. The starter wire is actually coming from the starter enable relay under the dash and could be rerouted to come out the driver's side if you really wanted to. If you're going to do that though, you might as well bypass the starter enable relay and VATS and run it straight off the ignition switch. The biggest problem is the blower motor wiring which comes out the passenger's side.
