In tank fuel pump?

So a while back I was adjusting the rocker arms on my car and I was using the ignition to turn the engine. (I was flicking the key on real quick to get the valves at the right positions) Anyways, I had the gas lines disconnected from the tank so gas wouldnt flow(the distributor was also disc so no spark) and gas started pouring out whenever I turned the key. My car is an 87 that originally had a carbd 305. So does this mean I have an in tank fuel pump? Im asking because I also have a mechanical pump on the engine which is now a 355. Also the computer is still in the car but not hooked up to the carb, so not sure if it is hooked up or controlling anything else still

Congratulations, your in-tank fuel pump actually works. They have been known to be failure prone, and since there is a mechanical pump on the engine, people don't understand why they have fuel delivery problems.

Re: In tank fuel pump?

Yeah I did some research and I see that my car came with both the in tank and mechanical due to vapor lock issues. So here are some more questions then.

Why didnt they just use the in tank one like the tbi/tpi cars?(mine was a lg4)

I now have a 355 with a carb, do i even need the mechanical pump now? Do i need the in tank pump if i have the mechanical?

Re: In tank fuel pump?

If your car is a GTA, then it didn't originally come with a 305 carb'd engine.

I'd suspect you have a GTA-badged Firebird/TA.
