Another 305 and "The Carb" Question
Another 305 and "The Carb" Question
Okay, so I am not looking to race or anything and do want to stay 50 state and emissions friendly and welcome any input.
I have a 1986 Camaro IROC-Z 305 LG4 with a manual 5 spd. I recently installed a set of Edelbrock TES Ti-Tech Headers with 2-1/4'' Inlet Slip-On Cat. This made a welcome change in a better sound and increased response to acceleration. I am waiting for a High Energy 268H Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft Complete Kit Lift .454 Duration 268 deg RPM Range 1500-5500 C.A.R.B approved set up to be put in later for a little better performance. I do love to drive my Camaro most days each week and am trying to go just a modified stock overall and now I am looking at carburetors. I wanted to put on the Edelbrock 1406 Street Performer 600CFM, but after all of the part ordering and opening and mounting I realized a simple thing...my computer controlled setup was not the same as what I was putting on with the Edelbrock as shown on the orange paper in the box I left for after install, not to mention the carb and air cleaner sat almost 4 1/2" to high for the hood to close. I am now reading through the directions and asking more questions before opening and installing anything. I was told Edelbrock made a model 1910 which is a performance tuned Q-Jet version of my Rochester but I can not find one or a crossover part number. so with all of this typed out there I would really appreciate any tips, guidance, anything you can share that could help. Is there a Rochester in my future even with the minor upgrades? Is it probably the least amount of headache to stay with what I know will work because it is already there? Again, I don't want to eliminate the emissions because my local area has failed the air quality alert days for about the last 5 years so I have a good feeling more regulation and stricter state guidelines are coming. Thanks for reading this and sharing anything from your experience.
P.S. I am sure if my problems are solved with your suggestions my wife will be happier also as she feels the garage is becoming my mistress lately, but I pursue the solutions when I am stumped. Thanks again

Re: Another 305 and "The Carb" Question
Interesting that you have clearance issues with your edelbrock...mine dropped right in with only a vague concern as to whether or not it'd fit.
I'm not ENTIRELY sure I grasp what you're asking, but I can tell you that without extensive knowledge on the subject of the ECM, you can't keep your comp controls and go carb. I don't know much about the factory carbed motors but I do know you'll need a new dizzy, they're not terrible from summit (bout 120 shipped for a coil-on-cap stype HEI).
There is a member here who managed to keep his CC advance dizzy (I wanna say it was 57kid) but from what I recall he said it was a headache doin' it up right.

Re: Another 305 and "The Carb" Question
Welcome to TGO.
If your computer controlled carb is working properly you won't net any performance gains changing out to another carb with vacuum/air valve secondaries. You may see some benefit to going to mechanical secondaries with your manual transmission but the 1406 doesn't fit the bill, nor does a q-jet.
If you swap out for a mechanical secondary carb (holley) you'll need to swap in a mechanical distributor. A new unit can be had for around $100.
I'd stick with what you've got, run it for a while with the new cam. I think you'll be happy and you'll keep your emissions.
If your existing carb is giving you any trouble, just post here and we'll try to help you out.

Re: Another 305 and "The Carb" Question
Thank you for your reply. I am trying to stay with the emissions and was curious about carb upgrades that would meet the computer and emission setup I have now while providing a little more pep on the performance side of a slightly modified stock ride. yours adn other replies have definately helped me gain new approach perspective and a possible reource to follow up with. Thanks again
Re: Another 305 and "The Carb" Question
NAF,
Thanks for your reply it was also helpful in confirming a gut feeling that the Rochester setup is enough to support the changes I have made without options to really increase the performance of my carburetor with the current setup. I also appreciate the idea and cost intro for going to mechanical secondary carb if it becomes a direction I want to go, or if my Rochester does have problems in the future. I really appreciate the input and quick response. Some forums don't have such interested members to offer feedback as much as they seek it.

Re: Another 305 and "The Carb" Question
There are no other carburetors aside from the factory E4ME Qjet which will work with the computer. The carburetor isn't what's holding you back performance-wise anyway.

If my '86 LG4 computer q-jet, computer distributor, and computer will handle my 350 (and it does quite nicely, thank you), it'll handle your 305.

thought it was you :]
Gentleman might need a nudge in the right direction as far as PROM reburning goes five7, and i don't know the first thing about that stuff.

I haven't done any PROM reprogramming. All I've done is try a couple of different base timing settings.
I do have an aftermarket PROM, but quite frankly, I can't tell the difference between it and the stock PROM, and the 305 passed emissions with the aftermarket PROM.
The last time I tried back-to-back runs with the stock and aftermarket chip, I was having problems with both. Turned out the choke pull-off had a small leak, and was causing intermittent bog problems. Since fixing the pull-off, I haven't changed anything, including the timing.
