replacing carb, maybe dumb questions
I'm replacing the carb on my Z28. I got a stock quadrajet, that's now rebuilt, and I'm replacing the old carb. I'm having an issue getting the old one off, and maybe I'm just missing something. I can't get the gas line off that plugs into the fuel filter. The new carb looks like the fuel line was cut, and I was thinking if I could cut the fuel line the same way and patch it with a piece of hose and some ring clamps, it might be fine. I can't see any other way to get the gas line off of the old carb. It looks like someone tried to before and mashed up the only bolt I can really get at. Being that I've had a car catch on fire for me once before, I'm hesitant to cut and patch a fuel line, but I can't figure out any other way to do this other than replacing the gas line entirely...which I don't really want to do. I couldn't get the piece of gas line off the replacement carb either, but I can get the compartment open where the fuel filter goes. My Dad, who's a big Trans-am enthusiast, told me "those lines are bent to go on once, and not come off".
I really hope this isn't a stupid question, but I just can't see any way to get that line off the carb. I guess a simpler question that would solve my problem is "how do you replace a fuel filter?" That's essentially where I'm stuck.

You can cut your line but then you need to go to the parts store and buy a new line to go from the fuel pump to the carb. Shouldn't be that expensive. You have to get the line off the new carb. You can mangle the nut on the fuel line but try not to damage the nut holding the fuel filter in. Do Not use a rubber hose to connect cut off fuel lines.

In-line fuel filters use short hose lengths clamped to metal fuel line. It isn't a problem at all.
