Re: help with my carburetor
My guess is that your carb is already supplying too much fuel for your car. I remember my Edelbrock being way too rich out of the box. More fuel will only make more power if your engine can use it. Too much fuel will kill horsepower, gas mileage, spark plugs and piston rings.

Look up ^^^^^ There is a sticky for Edelbrock carbs - the manual is there, as well as some nice videos that explain tuning on them.

Re: help with my carburetor
If you got the Edelbrock 1406 it is generally a little lean out of the box for a 305. I have a slightly better cam than stock and I recently put in .101 secodary jets and bumped up to the next richer setting on the primaries with a rod change. This is working out quite well for me.
A jet and rod kit is available for around $35. It has everything you really need. The manual is kind of confusing. If you are only a little mechanically inclined you can take the top ("air horn") off the carb and everything is easily accessed. The manual made a lot more sense to me after I took the carb apart the first time. These carbs are extremely simple.
