Re: 305 v8 carb help
If you have an LG4, it's already carbed - what's wrong with the carb on it? You can't get a better carb than the factory carb - anything else will be a step down. If you are hoping for performance gains, forget it - won't happen with any aftermarket carb. You'll lose power, and lose mileage in the process. Plus, it's illegal to swap to an aftermarket carb - depending on where you are at, might not pass inspection testing.
Intake is a legal swap, as long as it's a C.A.R.B approved intake, and you retain all emissions (like EGR). Note - C.A.R.B. has NOTHING to do with carburators - it's an acronym for a certified emissions equipment check.
So, why the switch to aftermarket?

Even disregarding the inspection junk ...
It's just that a properly tuned Quadrajet offers great gas mileage b/c of the small primaries, and really great performance from the huge secondaries - can be tuned to exceed any hp numbers you'll achieve with a 305, and most any acheived with a 350. Aftermarket carb is just a step backwards.
Having said that, I run an Edelbrock - but I was TBI before, and the Edelbrock came with my used 350 I bought - it works for me. But keeping your stock Quad is really the way to go for you, since you already have it.

Re: 305 v8 carb help
You should really consider retaining the stock system AND EGR. Functioning EGR will allow you to run more timing advance without light throttle pinging. More timing means more power and EGR is only functional during part throttle operation, it does not affect WOT power.
Unless you've an export model, the stock carb is computer controlled as well, as is the dist. Removing one requires replacing the other. You'll see no power increase from a properly functioning stock system.
Spend the money on better exhaust. Read:
