Okay so I'm hopefully ordering a new carbuerator tomorrow. I need something that will hold well in the 450-550HP range, for a 1974 350. I've got an Edelbrock Torker-II intake manifold, and I was thinking about going with the 650CFM Thunder AVS carb from Edelbrock, but I'm open to opinions if you guys think something else will do better for me.
The reason I'm replacing the carbuerator that's on there now is that my dad pulled it apart maybe 6 months ago.. then didn't put it all back together, and lost some pieces, plus I'm kind of doing a piece-by-piece rebuild of the whole engine anyways, so I figured I might as well get something decent.
Anyways, open to suggestions, thank you!

From what I understand, your first consideration should be changing that intake - I hear the Torker II's are not worth the effort, and you definitely won't see 400hp out of it.

Do you have a suggestion as far as which way I should go with this then? I can take back the intake(didn't bolt it in yet, still in the box & have reciepts, I can take it back and just get a victor jr or something if needed)Originally Posted by camaronewbie

What combination do you have to reach 500 HP?

I guess honestly I don't have the whole thing planned out. I'm just looking for a carb to accommodate it for now, that way I don't have to step up later on when I hit that point. Basically going carb & intake right now, next step will be to find a nice set of headers, cylinder heads, cam, electric fan, ignition, etc. afterwards. I'm piecing this all together 1 step at a time.Originally Posted by Apeiron

A 750 CFM Holley 4150 or equivalent should be enough. You could go with a Performer RPM Air Gap or a Victor Jr. The Victor Jr. will probably have a slight edge on a dyno, but I think it'd be a bit of a toss-up at that level to see which would make the car faster overall. I'd probably try the RPM, just because it'd be friendlier while you're building out to that level. You'll have to choose the rest of the system very carefully, and be prepared to accept compromises in the intermediate stages.

Alright, thanks for the input. Would it be too bad to go with one of the 770CFM street avengers that holley makes? this is going to sound dumb, but If I get the blue it will look better with my engine paint. They also have this in a 670, either way it's right around the same price as the Thunder AVS by Edelbrock that I was gonna buy. Please advise, thanks!Originally Posted by Apeiron

I wouldn't use a vacuum secondary carb in an all-out performance application.

What's the disadvantage of having a vacuum secondary? This is the first car I've ever built really, sorry if I seem kind of dumb on some of this stuff, using it as a learning point.Originally Posted by Apeiron

A properly sized and tuned DP will have better throttle response. VS carbs end up being more of a "one-size-fits-all" sort of thing that can sort of self-size itself to the needs of the engine even when someone tries to use too large of a carb.
Listen to Apeiron about the carb...especially if you are shooting for all out performance. Getting 500HP out of a 350 is no small task. My car has 11:1 compression, ported AFR heads, ported RPM Air Gap, 750 Mighty Demon, large hydraulic roller (.580 lift/242@.050 duration) and a really good valve train. I would guess it is making around 475HP. To get to 500 is going to take more cam and more RPM. I currently shift at 6500RPM (and bounce off the 7200RPM rev limiter a lot).
This should give you an idea what to shoot for. Good luck!
