Primary jets...

Another thread for another issue....
When I start and run my car...which is in stasis at the moment pending other repairs....there is an obvious build up of soot on the ground under the exhaust....pretty black indeed. Nice smell of richness too.
I'd like to know the values of the stock jets...how I can tell which ones I have and what would be a good size to replace mines.
Also where is a good place to pick these jets up.
I have no need for high performance...
I have a need for fuel economy...
I'm not planning on getting on it much...
I'd just like it to run as best it can for what I have...
305 stock with soon to be 700r4 when I get round to putting it in.
I'm not adverse to doing a carb rebuild...It just looks hard from the instructions and I've been putting it off purely because I've never done it and don't need another part laying around that needs more of my attention. I'm sure if I read alot about it I will lose my fear for doing it...but until then....I will await advice.

As always any insight helpful and appreciated.

Did you set the idle mixture and choke?

Re: Primary jets...

Actually I've not done anything with the carb except those 2 screws at the bottom by the manifold (I'm thinking those are what you are referring to the idle mixture) but that was a while ago upon the first repair of the motor. If I recall I set those by RPM with my timing light. Perhaps there is another way?
I prob need to do that again. The choke was fine until recently and this was way obvious even when it was not at my house during repairs.
I'm looking at the choke issue tomorrow.
I'll post back results.
