Rich or Lean

Hey Guys,

Sorry in advance for my question, however, I am not too experienced with carbs. Just put on a 650 and I can get her to run and idle with some help. When i get it on the road A) it will backfire on me quite a bit, B) the emissions are terrible, C) the last time I turned the key off, it remained running for a second or two, almost as if it was still getting fuel. Whats the deal with making it Lean vs Rich and how to I do that. I have a Carter carb, pretty much the same thing as an edelbrock. What are the two screws on the front of my carb? Is that how I adjust the A/F mix?

Thanks so much

I can't help with the Carter Carb, but what about your timing setup? It sounds like you may have the timing retarded. Where is the initial set?

I set it TDC at 0 degrees... I really don't know much about Carb's so I'm really struggling.

Re: Rich or Lean

That could be your problem. You want about 10 degrees of advance at idle. Tell us what distributor you are using and exactly how your are setting/checking the timing.

Re: Rich or Lean

I adjusted the mixture screws and seems to have really calmed it down a bunch and its idling and driving nicely. I will go ahead this weekend and adjust to 10 degrees TDC and see what that does for me.

Thanks!!

That's 10 degrees BTDC at idle with the vacuum advance disconnected.

You do have a vacuum/mechanical advance distributor, right?
