Fuel Level Sender Interchange
Today i was at the junkyard and found a nice fuel sender, but it had an in tank pump. My 1982 Camaro is a Carbed. The Pump is on the Engine. Since there are about 3 years that have that setup, It's harder to find that sender. Can i use one from a Caprice, For Example, to replace the one in my Car? If not, are there any other cars/trucks that DO have what i need?

So, what you're saying is that there is a way to use the newer style sender and retain my present fuel delivery system?

Re: Fuel Level Sender Interchange
I ran into the same issue on my 84 since the fuel sending unit was nearly disintegrated with rust and decay. Didn't do it myself since I have no hydraulic lift and the exhaust had to be cut but the boys down at the shop were able to do it. They used a sending unit for an 85 fuel injected model and where the in-tank pump was, they attached an extended stainless steel pickup tube with a compression fitting. Works fine.
The sticky at the top of the page -> https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/carb...nk-pickup.html actually makes sense to me. This is practically what they did to mine, only he went with an external electric pump; I kept my old fashioned mechanical pump.

Yes, very simple actually, with a little bit of modification. Previous poster answered how to do it and the sticky will help some. It'll really make sense if/when you pull the old sender out and compare it to a newer fuel injected model. You'll see the difference and what you'll have to do.

Re: Fuel Level Sender Interchange
thank you very much! So, Then, i could even get a Sender from a 4th gen and make it work? This seems very liberating.

Re: Fuel Level Sender Interchange
As far as i know, the 4th gen senders dont work with a 3rd gen tank, the tank openeings are different sizes and have a different way to secure it. (unless that just happened on the tank i pulled out of the jyard not too long ago.)

4th gen won't work, they use a different value but any third gen will work.

4th gen pickups just plain don't fit in 3rd gen tanks. The V6 4th gen sending units use the same resistance values as 3rd gens, though. You'd just have to swap over the entire tank.
EFI sending units have a different connector and shorter leads than carb car sending units.
Non-in-tank-electric-pump pickups were used from '82-'86, or 5 years. They made more 3rd gens during those years than they did the last 5 (although admittedly even some of the '82-'86 had the in-tank pump). Have you posted on the TGO "parts wanted", or searched the "parts for sale" classifieds? You might find one.

Re: Fuel Level Sender Interchange
I think i hit a Homerun. Found a 1985 Camaro today that still had the Gas Tank. I was expecting to see a bunch of wires coming off the sender, but to my delight, there were only 2. I guess this means that the car was carbed, right? anyhow, i looked at the tank and it SEEMED to be sound. Here in Shreveport, all the junkyards puncture the tanks, but this one seemed unmolested. How could it be? I dropped the tank (A really nice looking tank) and could not find a hole ANYWHERE. Neither could the owner of the Junkyard. I picked up the whole unit for $28. What do you guys think?

Awsome man! My aftermarket tank that is CRAP spectra ran me $250.00. Wish I had a junk yard around when I needed one.
