thinking carb swap.. question on distributor
I currently have a 305tbi engine completely stock (with cold air, ultimate tbi mods and a little bit of an exhaust mod) which isn't running good at all in the 3k and beyond rpms.. it staggers really bad. I have no tuning gear or anything, but i do have a carb, and an lt1 cam that I would like to install. I have researched what I need, which is a manifold, an inline fuel regulator, and a non-efi distributor. My worry is that the lt1 cam will destroy the distributor not long after it is installed. I know you guys have worked around this problem, if it is one. So advise me.
Thanks for all of your help

Re: thinking carb swap.. question on distributor
Id avoid pulling the TBI if at all possible. I personally think the TBI has more high RPM potential than TPI.
To switch to carb you'll have to deal with:
1 the torque converter lockup
2 turning on the fuel pump
3. turning on your radiator fans
4. Fuel pressure regulator + lines (Get a 3-port regulator and connect the return line!)
5. the impracticality of daily driving a carb on a motor thats mostly stock

Re: thinking carb swap.. question on distributor
Not sure how a LT1 cam is going to destroy a distributor.
If you swap to carb ...
Fuel pump will still function, just won't have any priming (which you don't need since carb holds plenty of fuel in the bowls).
Fans will function as they always did.
- You will need method for locking torque converter as mentioned, usually involves dropping the tranny pan to install new switch/wires.
- You HAVE to use a return stule fiuel pressure reguialtor like the Mallory 4309 if using intank fuel pump.
- You have to get a vacuum advanced distributor as mentioned.
- You could have inspection issues - carbing is not legal in alot of states.
I'd get the TBI issue resolved, since that would be way cheaper, easier, and carbing an LO3 does nothing but lose serious gas mileage.

Re: thinking carb swap.. question on distributor
well guys, I have tried to resolve it before without luck. It has been running really rich for a long time. I may get 15 mpg mixed city and highway. I really don't want to spend the money on tuning gear which if everything is stock, I dont see why I would need it. I have replaced the o2 sensor, the map sensor, used the diagram for vacuum hoses.. I dont know if it is the injectors, or another sensor that i need to replace. and for this discussion I would probably need to move this to the tbi forum.

Have you done a tune up: ie new plugs, rotor and cap, new wires, new fuel filter and all that?
