84 Camaro Running Rich

I have an 84 camaro with the 305. I am getting black smoke from the tail pipe on idle. I believe it is running rich because it wastes too much gas. The choke is stuck closed. Any ideas on how to adjust it to make it open? It has an electronic choke. I have to constantly mess with the throttle adjust screw on the driver side of the carb. I'm kind of new to carbs can anyone help?

Are you getting power to the choke coil? Is the wire even connected? Is the linkage hooked up?

Choke coil is getting power and all the linkage is there and working properly. Wire is connected. Had the alternator tested and is putting out plenty of power.

Can you can open the choke manually? If so, does it seem to have some tension on it and snap back shut when you let it go? If you're getting power TO the choke, maybe the actual choke element is bad.

Did this problem suddenly occure, or was it always like this?

Re: 84 Camaro Running Rich

The choke moves fine without any tension like there is'nt even a spring there. This problem has been there for about 4 months that i know of since i bought the car. I was trying to get it on the road and inspected this weekend. also i noticed that the transmission is shifting at 2000 rpm and the car doesn't go more than 15mph and that the brake pedal is hard to push as if the car was off. I'm thinking vacuum leak. and the transmission and brake is sudden it just happened yesterday.

So that I know that I'm getting this right. I'm new to carbs, The small butterfly in the front is the choke and the one on the bottom of the small one is the throttle plate correct?

Re: 84 Camaro Running Rich

Does anyone know or have a diagram for the vacuum system on the car that might be able to help me figure out where the leak is coming from?

It's possible the choke thermostat was put on incorrectly so the spring isn't contacting the lever inside the choke thermostat housing like it is supposed to.

You probably need to adjust the throttle valve cable properly.

Check the vacuum line that goes between the brake booster and the back of the carb. Part of it is rubber, part is steel tube.
