need some help with a swap!!!

I have an 87 IROC Z and I pulled the tpi 350 in exchange for a 377 stroker with carbureted fuel delivery. rRan into a couple of problems but now I am faced with how to get fuel to thing.

1. do I need to drop the tank to get the original fuel pump to remove it in order for my mechanical pump to be able to pull fuel, or will the fuel be pulled through. I know the original fuel pressure regulator was on the stock fuel rail.

2. If I was to have to remove the pump and install a standard hose in the tank for pick up like some websites suggest then would my sending unit still operate and is the sending unit electrically operated or is it operated with resistance.

I think that is all for now if I come up with any thing else then I will be sure to
post again. Thanks in advance.

So is that a dart block your putting in or?

Check the top of the stickies in this section for a post on you problem. Rock Auto sent me an email this week with a part number for the in tank fuel pump designed for our carbs: Manufacturer: CARTER Part No: P74050 Notes: CARB; Requires a Mech. and Elec. Pump

For the sake of saving aggravation and time get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator..Mallory 8309 I think, leave the in-tank and dial back the fuel pressure. Read the stickies!

Re: need some help with a swap!!!

Ok, very new here not sure what the stickies are, and also I have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator a holley return type. you mean just use the electric one that is stock for the car? If so not sure if that is possible for the fact that I pulled the stock wiring in exchange for a painless harness. I want to know if the fuel can be efficiently pulled through the in tank pump or should I open it and drop in a hose or a manual fuel pump pick up. and also can i just run power and ground to a fused switch and cut the stock pump on/off. I know its a lot but don't like doubling back.

Re: need some help with a swap!!!

You either need to

1) remove the intank fuel pump and rig a carb pickup using a mechanical fuel pump on the block

2) remove the intank fuel pump and rig a carb pickup and use an external fuel pump designed for a carb

3) leave the intank pump and use a Mallory 4309 regulator (or other similar RETURN-STYLE regulator - can ONLY use a return- style regulator with the factory in-tank pumps

You do not need an electric pump AND a mechanical pump as mentioned above - cars have ben using only a mechanical pump since the dawn of automotive time with no issues

Easiest is to keep using the pump in the tank, and get a return-style regulator like the Mallory 4309.
