Need help with this cable please

Hi,
There's this cable that goes from the shifter in my car (It's right next to the cable that changes the gears on the transmission) to a bracket on the carburetor. When it's installed, I can't move the shifter down from park, it's stuck. It moves fine without it installed though.. and I can move the cable back and forth on the carburetor side but not on the shifter side. Is the cable broken or ?

My setup is a cc quadrajet and 700r4 transmission.

Re: Need help with this cable please

You are confused on what runs where.

There3 are 2 cables on the shifter - 1 runs to the driver side of the trans to actually change the gears, the other runs to the ignition switch under the dash.

The one to the ignition switch is the safety cable - it keeps the car key from being turned unless the tranny is in park or neutral.

To get to the ignition switch, you have to remove the lower dash panel driver side, then remove the two large buts that hold the under dash panel bracket in place, then remove the two large nuts that hold the steering column up, and let the column come down into the floorboard (all the wires will kinda hold it in place). Then you'll see the ignition switch mounted on top of the steering column about 1/2 way down. That is where the second shift cable runs to.

The cable that attaches to the carb is the TV cable - it connects to the top of the tranny on the pass side of the car - that's the one that is crital to tranny life to get connected correctly and adjusted properly.

Hope that helps.
