84 carburator trouble

My wife has a 84 camaro she bought new and has sat most of its life. Now has 16,xxx miles on a 305 V8 model car.
I am having trouble with it starting. I may start on its own at times, but often needs alittle shot of gas in the carburator.

I have checked the supply at the carb. filter while I replaced the filter. I have a good supply there. I had it running and took it for a 20-30 mile run and it seemed to have things worked out.

Waxed it and was going to take it out, started right up pulled out of the driveway and it died. Thats when I check supply at the carb.

Car seems to run if primed w/ gas poured into the carb.

I did some searching and found one post of a check valve near the fuel filter in the carb. They spoke of removing it.

Any help would be much appricatated.

Thanks

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

I believe what you're saying is it will run if you get it started by pouring some gas in the carb, but won't start if you don't put the gas in the carb. Did the filter you installed have the check valve? I doubt that is the problem, more likely your fuel pump is weak.

What 305 engine is it, exactly? The base V8 LG4 had a VIN with the 8th character of "H", and the high performance L69 had a "G". The L69 usually had an additional electric pump in the tank, which was prone to failure. Reports are that not all '84 model L69's had that in-tank pump, though. However, the in-tank pump could be installed by the dealer if the owner complained about vapor lock with either engine.

Did you put fresh gas in the tank? You should seriously consider using gasoline stabilizer before storing the car again, if you didn't previously.

Re: 84 carburator trouble

It has the H code motor.

The filter didn't have a check valve that I could see. I searched posts on this board and someone had spoke of the check valve located on the carb. side of the inlet filter.

It had less than a half tank in it and did have fuel treatment in it.

I have topped the tank off and have Seafoam in it also.

The accelerator pump doesn't give it a shot like it used to.
Locted in the midwest and has had ethonal fuel run in it.
Looking at pump plungers and I see some rated for ethonal fuels.

Beginning to think the accelerator pump isn't giving it a shot to start on

I'd say pour some gas in the carb to gert it running, then check your fuel pressure. should be 6psi or so. Even 3-4psi will run the motor at idle.

If it's running idle, shut it down so there is fuel in the line. Then looking down the primaries, if you manually turn the throttle by hand you should see fuel squirt. Could be the carb needs a rebuild.
