cc carb question

ok so i had a guy tell me today that the cc carbs computer function is junk, in other words it would be better to go to non computer controlled with vaccuum advance, hei distrubutor because the computer really is only needed for the smog pump etc (he said pollution stuff) i know it says on the manual that it has tps (dont know what thats for), and a solenoid for the a/f ratio. but the computer is apparently not really running much of anything on the carb that you should keep it. he also said the computer controlling aspect was really more of a gimmick by chevy to say, look government we are making an effort to be more environmental. this guy builds cars for a living and has been mentioned on this site a few times as well. maybe his reasons for wanting to switch over to non cc carb are fishy but is it a bad idea regardless?

Re: cc carb question

Tell him to stop breathing so deep when he's got the fire cabinet open.

The computer controls the ignition timing and the amount of fuel, therefore it is running the engine.

Re: cc carb question

going from a fully functioning CC carb to a non cc carb is a horrible idea, and not federally legal. if you were building a track only car, then go nuts. but for a daily driver, youll loose gas milage and probably some performance (since non cc carbs need to be constantly retuned for changing environments, and the CC carb can do that on the fly)

He's a technophobe. Ignore him.

You'll even get people trying to tell you that carbs are better than fuel injection. Ignore them, too.
