Carb float question

First off Happy Holidays,

Now off to work. I am restoring an 82 Camaro SC 4 bbl. I have had an issue of the car smelling like fuel out the tailpipes, to the point where i would have to leave the garage. It has an Edelbrock 1406 installed by PO. I dont know anything about carbs, Im learning as I go. Anyway I checked the float adjustments and compared as per the instructions, I noticed the following. With the airhorn cover upside down the floats were at 7-8/16 of an inch (normal) however with the AH rightside up the floats dropped to 1.25 inches (directions say it should be 15/16 to 1 inch), a .25 inch difference!!! could this be the culprit for my fuel smell??? no vac leaks noted.

Thanks in advance and I hope everyones holiday was blessed and safe.

Re: Carb float question

Float adjustments are well known for being bad out of the box on Edlebrock carbs. I doubt that's the main cause of your problem, but it should be addressed while you have it apart anyway.

Re: Carb float question

Thx Damon. I havent checked fuel pressure yet. PO said he changed the fuel pump before I bought it. stupid fuel test gauge is like 40 bucks so itll have to wait. while I have it off Ill check the jets and rods to see if he calibrated it differently, if there is anything u think that could cause my condidtion let me know.
